Reverse the Curse
I have found that since as of late I have been washing my hands A LOT. I just always feel soo much better when I'm playing if my hands are nice and clean and dry. The neck just feels right after I wash my hands. This is esp. true with my new SX strat because it has a nice vintage looking stain on the neck that feels WONDERFUL when my hands are clean. What about you? Am I just weird? P.S. I just posted this mainly because I'm a little upset with all thats going here on as of late and we need some guitar talk for sure. The forumite formerly known as Cooper. Big Red 67
No, The one thing to be aware of is that washing too much can remove caliouses. (sorry, I can't spell) Sorry, If I contributed to the upset. Big Red's Ride Blog
Compact Diss
manic hand washer during practice/play, I use paper towels or toliet paper on door handles when leaving public bathrooms, use my elbow to open doors as much as possible, use my side if it's a push exit---The spot with the most dirt in a bathroom is the door handle upon leaving, alot of people do not wash their hands even after #2--I've seen it--a guy we used to work with!! ricknbokkerv2.0
Unfortunately, I'm doing "non- musician" time in a hospital. I have to wash my hands all day long, or wear gloves in the performance of a lot of my duties. After a couple of weeks of that, I lost all my callouses, ended up cutting my fingers on my strings. Now I don't have callouses. I have scars. They hold up a lot better. Ricky Click on some ads once in a while!! -------------->
Werewolf by Night
Yehp, if I washed 'em any more, I might be borderline obssessive-compulsive. And I know exactly what you mean about how nice it feels to play with your hands- and the neck 'n' fretboard- being fresh 'n' clean. (Playing fingerstyle probably makes it even more appreciable!) Lee Flier
I find it harder to play right after washing my hands... makes the callouses softer, and a little grunge on my hands seems to make it easier to grip the pick, slide up and down the neck etc.

Reverse the Curse
maybe thats the secret!! Dirty hands = dirty tones!!!!! The forumite formerly known as Cooper. Lee Flier
LOL yeah... well my LP's neck has been pretty grungy since long before I even owned it anyhow, so washing my hands before playing it seems pretty pointless! Same with my other guitars really. Maybe I'd feel differently if I always played on a shiny new neck, but... nahhh.
musicalhair
I'm always wahing my hands, especially before I play. I kinda think the strings last longer but I've always washed my hands a lot before playing so I don't know any other way. Also, I love the hot air dryers before I play. I got "hip" to them in winters going to my guitar lessons. I'd wash my hands and basically run the thing like 3 or 4 or 5 times warming up and stretching and drying my hands. I've met other guys that felt the same way, I love when a club has one of those in the bathrooms. I think really dry hands (not like chapped but you know after you wash) makes a big difference in wheather or not the whole hand washing is a good thing for the playing. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. Werewolf by Night
Following the "dirty hands/dirty tones"-line of logic, I wonder how best to sound funky, skankin', spanky, 'n' grungey... Hey! I try to make sure that I've got at least 15-20 after I wash my hands before I play. And forget about playing shortly after a shower or washing the dishes! Big Red 67
Here's stat: The cleanest spot in the house is (drum roll please) the toilet seat. I don't remember the exact #'s. The seat 4 to 8 parts per million, kicthen counter 3000 to 4000 parts per million. Something like that, those may not be spot on figures. The difference is well represented by the numbers I used here. ""Some of the cleanest places in the average home are in the bathroom. In our work, the fewest number of fecal bacteria are on the toilet seat," he said, because people know that they have to clean carefully in the bathroom, but don't apply the same standards to the kitchen." mwestenberg
My hobby is gourmet cooking which lends itself to frequent handwashing which I fear is becoming detrimental to my guitar playing calluses. I seem to require a few minutes between washing and playing to let the surface moisture disappear and dry smoothness return. All Hail FastFret! Lyrics. Wasted space between solos. I can't tell you, but I can play it for you.
