A question for everyone.

One of the reasons I stopped posting here for a long time, was because I didn't want to get everyone mad by posting about my guitars all the time. This forum has obvious;y been very strict about spam, but the whole building thing has become such a dominant part of my life these days that it's really hard for me to not talk about it. We just finished two new guitars today, so the question is really simple, do you guys want me to post about them (photos, clips etc) or not? I'm perfectly happy to live by whatever the general consensus may be.

I guess the difference is this:

Are you posting because you think the forum members might be interested in your instruments and your progress as a luthier or because you just want to sell a product.

Based on your long history as a contributor on the the forum, I can't help but think that it's the former.

You've been here long enough that it would be hard to see your posts as spam.

Jim, My feeling is very simple. Keep doing what you're doing.

Your music has been a treat, your posts informative and your demeaner as normal as can be in this day and age. The fact that you build guitars now shouldn't change that.

I feel much like Gabriel on the reasons of your guitar posts. More to show us your babies than spam for sales. Hell, seems to me you've already sold the ones you're posting anyway, so that's that.

Just a side note; When I get flush, one of your axes, as well as one of Dave Wendler's will be in my possession.

Jim,

I didn't even read your entire post when I saw where it was going. You are most welcome here, and your guitars are most welcome here.

You were at this forum long before your enterprise became viable. Many of us shared your good and not-so-good times trying to start up. You are a part of this forum. What you build is part of this forum.

Your link is there if anyone is interested in pricing, ordering, etc. No problem.

Just keep us in the loop about new developments. I love to be "in-the-know" before the general public.

It sounds like you've hit the "big time". CONGRATULATIONS!

when I look at your post count, and I think about just how building guitars from scratch really is, I would only be angry at you if you DIDN'T post about your creations. Its obviously something very special to you. Who better to talk about your special hobby with than your friends (or online friends at least ;) ). Now, if you were mass producing some low quality pedal or junk and were constantly pitching them and giving us links to buy them etc. it would be different. But sharing your creations that you work so hard and and IMO are just plain beautiful is an entirely different thing. Sorry about the rant, all I was sayin was...

Do you remember the troll-session cat, Carmine? All he did was spam us with invitations to hear him talk at Melancon and his own site.

The irony is, when the Melancon moderator temporarily banned him from their site because of his rude behaviour here, the moderator became interested in a discussion we had going about record labels and the future of recording and distribution. Turns out he runs a small indie label. Although he had just begun posting here, his experience as a label owner was germaine to the conversation. He, too, was hesitant to say much, at first, about his business lest it be misconstrued as back-door spam. I assured him that the content of his posts was anything but spam, despite the source of his information.

To be concise, the content of your posts has always been one of support for the topic, not a search for ways to slip in the Soloway guitar spiel to sell instruments. Many have expressed genuine interest in your creations, so why not?

It's participation that determines how any possibly spammy posts will be taken. You should have no fear, Jim, that your posts will be offensive to the group. ;):thu:

And I second whoever said your recorded examples are always a wonderful treat. :thu:

I'm more of a lurker here these days; and, while I don't/am not able to contribute as much as I'd like, I feels this bears speaking about: keep posting Jim. As a relative newbies here (I've only been playing for 3 years or so), your detailed descriptions of the process of guitar/business-building and wonderful audio clips are always appreciated.

It's not spam, Jim, it's your duty as a senior member.

Of course you should post about what you are doing and whatever you're interested in, Jim! You are a regular, long since before I showed up here. And you actively take part in various threads. Big difference between that and merely showing up to slam in some free advertising!

It's like folks in a pub; the regulars will always talk shop and strike deals amongst themselves, while someone who's suddenly burst in handing out leaflettes and loudly engaging folks in stilted salesman BS is annoying.

Thanks guys. Message received loud and clear. And as for hitting the big time, there's been lot more talk than money, so don't believe everything you hear. I do however, have some really nifty little touches that you guys haven't seen yet and with two guitars just comleted today, I'll have lots of new photos and soundclips in the next day or so.

Hey Jim, I still haven't read the "In case anyone is wondering where I've been..." thread but when I saw it I was like "hey actually I was wondering where you were".

You're an important part of this place and if you feel talking about your guitars is germaine (not the saint but the .... word ) to the discussion at hand then feel free.

To me it is only spam if you don't believe it or don't really participate otherwise. Or maybe I'm just not offended by it, not that I want to try to define spam, but to me it isn't offensive-- I mean you don't like put big implants below the neck or anything because that seems to offend some here . :D

Has anyone like gotten on your case about mentioning your guitars? If I see it, I hope to be the first to set the record straight and defend your right to express confidence in your product. I already know you'll only mention it in the most appropriate manner.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Spam is somebody on post #1 bragging about their products, you're obviously a regular here and we all like your guitars, same with Boggs and his lovely creations. Very considerate of you to ask. A thread about guitars - I like the novelty of it!!

Obviously I'm stating any new or different opinions here, but I thinks that you're great person to have around. You tend to post very thoughtful and useful comments, no matter what the topic. And, I certainly like hearing about your guitars (and especially seeing pix of 'em :thu: ). You do great work, and it just makes sense to share that with your friends. :)

May all your thoughts be random!
