LeftyBlues
Bought a Fostex unit off good old e-bay so I could lay down some rhythm tracks and play leads, or attempt to play leads to be correct . Problem is, I don't have a stereo cassette player/recorder for making a final stereo tape. Since I'm gonna have to open my wallet a little wider (sorry, honey!!) I was thinking rather than buying old technology (cassettes) maybe I should buy a card and software so I can dump the 4 track recording into my computer, burn it on a CD. Make sense? This is all new to me, so appreciate knowing what you pro's do. I'm hoping I can come up with something that won't cost too much - still paying off my Strat and would prefer to keep my present wife! Thanks in advance. I was born at night but I wasn't born last night...
BillWelcome Home Studios
So go to Radio Shack, buy a "stereo 1/8 inch male to whatever the 2 output connectors on the Fostex are" cable, and use the built in sound card. You might look at any number of shareware editors, like NTracks. There are a lot of choices for little or no money. Had you asked before you bought, I would have suggested a Tascam US-428.... looks and works like a PortaStudio, but plugs into your USB port and offers 24 bit recording. Includes software and MIDI support. Cheap on ebay, too. Bill "I believe that entertainment can aspire to be art, and can become art, but if you set out to make art you're an idiot." LeftyBlues
Thanks, Bill. I was screwing around at lunch one day and found this recorder, got it for $50 delivered so I don't regret buying it. When you say "sound card", does that mean the one in my computer? I'm not much into computers, just enough to be dangerous. I'll take a look tonight and see what I've got in our Dell. Thanks! I was born at night but I wasn't born last night... Big Red 67
Some people mix down to a VCR or BETA for home studio work. The quality is better then cassette. The video tapes last longer then cassette as well. Big Red's Ride Blog
LeftyBlues
A huge thank you to you guys, I just downloaded NTracks and within maybe a half hour burned a song onto a CD!!!! I'm so happy I could just spit. I just can't believe it was relatively easy and actually works, simply amazing. I've gotten pretty skeptical anytime you drag a computer into the picture, I'm not like you young whippersnappers who upload/download/sideload all day long, knowwhatImeanVern? Anyway, I now have my first song, if you can call it that, that I can play for the hosers I work with. Give me a little time and I'll figure out how to post my song on the forum. Many thanks!!!!! So be sure to register your copy of NTracks and send the guy who wrote it his fee. Shareware works, but it works best when we don't cheat. I've been making music in the computer since the mid 1980s. You've got nothing to fear but user stupidity. 'member how when you got a scab, oyur moma told you to leave it alone, don't pick at it? A music computer is the same way. Once you get it set up, leave it alone! The biggest problem people have with computers is that they will not stop futzing with them. my whip still snaps, but it hasn't been young in a long time.
