Well these issues should be detailed at the Gibson site and from immediate observation there are distinction between the plating and the base metals on hardware. This might have some impact on the ability of the plating to last or adhere to the base molding. There are also visual or decorative differences in the headstock crown and fret markers.

The Standard tuners are Schallers and the Special has... ? something.

Standards are traditionally considered The Guitar of any model that Gibson produced and all other models seem to be relegated to lesser status. While Customs always had more artistic flare they never sold as well as the Standard lines as Les Pauls or SGs.

There's likely more to it than that.

Everything SG (an SG meca) Gibson SG models

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

I always thought it was due to the pickups being either better or more expensive, and possibly different finishes, you'd have to play one to find the tonal difference.

alcohol,

Most of the differences between the Standard and the Special are cosmetics. Gibson decided to create a cheaper version of the Standard, using cheaper parts.

The differences are:

1) The Standard features a hotter bridge pickup. Saves money.

2) There is no binding on the neck of the Special. Bound necks and etc. are somewhat expensive to add, thus getting rid of it would lower the price a bit.

3) Inlays are cheaper and easier to produce on the Special, but don't look nearly as cool.

4)No pickup covers on the Special, which saves a few bucks.

5) The tuners are Gibson's own junk, not nearly as good as the Schaller.

However, when I started playing guitar 4 years ago, the price of the Standard was $1500. They've dropped the price to $1100 in order to compete with the Fender Strats.

The SG Standard cost $500 in '75.

I concider myself very lucky to be able to play on Sign's '61 "Les Paul SG model".

Same type Zappa used to play on! :thu:

I think that Metallica singer plays one as well, not as good as Zappa used to though :D ...

I must say it is the most ace guitar I've ever held. The neck is a bit wider then other SG models and its got a sustain unlike any other. Also it plays like a feather, when you even think of grabbing a chord you will hear it.

I don't know if the pickups are original, the bridge one is a zebra, the other one some plain black humbucker. The binding on one side of the neck is missing and its got dot inlays.

I'll post a pic of it soon as I got one.

I think it's worth quite some money nowadays as well, Eventhough it looks like it's been on the bottom of the ocean for a couple of years.
