shredmasta666
Was Metallica's "The Black Album" stolen by JZ, or did he have permission to use the name, or did it just not matter if he used it or not? I swear to drunk I'm not god
Big Red 67
Danger Mouse used the Beatles White Album and JZ's acapella stuff and mixed them together. Big Red's Ride Blog
Steve LeBlanc
I suppose any album with a black cover could be called the black album...Prince had one too http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Shannon
reminds me of spinal tap... maybe he had every intention of calling it something else but it the original cover was too offensive to women
Adamixoye
Is Metallica's "The Black Album" even the official name of the album? Even if it is, I don't think that's something that you can copyright. Edit: It's copyright, not copywrite. I believe that is the greatest reply I\'ve ever read! I\'m not even joking. -- justinruins
shredmasta666
I looked into it and the album was really just self titled. I swear to drunk I'm not god
Gabriel E.
Speaking of which, have you heard Dangermouse's "Grey Album"? It's JZ's "Black Album" mixed with the Beatles' "White Album". Actually a fantastic record. There's also the "Double Black" album by Cheap Cologne which mixes JZ's and Metallica's records together. The results aren't quite as successful as Dangermouse's but some of it still rocks. BillWelcome Home Studios
You cannot copyright a title. By the way, I found a 45 last night in the props for the show "Dream Girls". (A musical loosely based on the story of the Supremes, with a lot of dramatic liecence and name changing.) Neil Sedaka singing "Stairway to Heaven" written by Neil Sedaka and some other fellow. BenderOfStrings
The album is officially called "Metallica." I think either fans or the media just adopted the name "the black album" as an easier way to identify it.

Gabriel E.
"The Black Album" name originally came from the movie "This is Spinal Tap". Spinal Tap are prevented from releasing "Smell the Glove" and the record company releases a record with a plain black cover instead. The term was originally used for Metallica's album as an ironic jab. It stuck. Caevan O’Shite
Yeah, the first time I heard of a "real" album being referred to as "the Black Album", it was that one by Prince back a few years ago. If yer gonna play Like Henry and Gibson, the Beatles (or whomever owns the rights) should sue all of 'em over the obvious confusion in the market vs. the "White Album"... BillWelcome Home Studios
Dig. To me, the Prince album is "The Black Album", while others were 'nicknamed' "the black album" by listeners like us.
