Getting ready to.....

Start a new amp project. For those of you who have been on this forum for more than a couple of years, you know that I've had my heart set on offering an amp alongside the guitars.

We'd tried two different pure class A prototypes, a 300B and one that would take any large octal base power tube. Those SE amps just aren't strong enough. And, those first two amps were built on my spec...but I wasn't around to watch it done. This next amp I'll be there....

Here's the plan: 12A*7 input and phase splitter, with EL34's on the output, in class AB. Solid state rectification, as we're after a pristine clean tube tone. We're hoping for about 40 watts, and will avoid a negative feedback loop if we can. I had the opportunity to play through a similar amp last Friday, and just loved the sound of the EL34; warmer and just as bright as a 6L6, but not as "glassy" sounding....and that amp has a front based on the old tweed deluxe.

Control layout will be simple(I hope)....one knob tone stack, and a volume control. Planning on a tweed deluxe Mojo cab, unless I can find someone to build them for less money(doubtful...a great product at a very reasonable price).

I need input on the cab covering...I'm leaning toward the old Ampeg grey check...but am open to suggestions; I also like the "knobby" brown tolex/oxblood grill...Will need to order the cab pretty quickly.

So that's it...pretty damn basic...four tubes, an input jack and a speaker....

Starting work on it a week from Tuesday...will get the chassis configuration laid out, and get the iron on order.

The speaker is an Eminence Beta 12LT . I've been using one for over a year in my recabbed Pro Jr. Here's their description: "A twin-cone model for full range output in compact P.A. systems. The addition of the second cone gives extended high frequency response up to a useful 8kHz. The Beta 12LT has a 2" polyamide-imide coated two-layer 32 ga. copper voice coil, kapton coil former, 38 oz. magnet, vented core, paper cone with cloth edge, and a paper dust cap."

Most electric guitar speakers have a "presence peak"(which is the manufacurer's pleasant way of saying...there's a humongous frequency response hump) around 2K. This one has reasonably flat response out to about 6K...sounds great with my guitars.

In fact, the output tubes and iron chosen will be for the best match to this speaker....all the amp gurus I've talked to told me to figure the speaker out first, then "back" into the amp design.
