Lab Series amps are known to be one of the few solid state amps worth owning. I toured with a guitar player with the Wilkinsons who loved his. It was sweet. And when the gear trailer detached from the tour bus, flipped on it's top and slid 350 yards over scrub brush and small trees in Southern Illinois, that amp was as right as rain. (Inside a road case, of course. ) Prior to that I'd never heard of Lab Series. Then I re-discovered them during my short tenure at Gibson. I had no idea Gibson manufactured them. O.K., maybe I should've said fifteen or sixteen guys who like 'em! I don't mean that they're bad amps, I mean that they're a good example of something that some people don't like, and some people just love. I can think of many amps that I'd like a LOT less than a Lab, but I can also think of a lot that I'd rather have, as well. Not that they're "bad" at all... they just suit some more, and some less. Dr.Fuzz
My first electric was a '59 Les Paul Jr. I bought in '76 for 50$... that started my love affair with the P90. I can't tell you how many people told me I should replace it with a humbucker, but I always thought it sounded great, especially through a cranked Gibson amp Now I have several guitars with P90's. As has been said, the hum is there, but is not that tough to deal with.... drfuzz "I'm just here to regulate the funkiness"

Outrider
I just got an Agile AD-2300 JR (click) with P-90's and it gets really cool sounds. I have always preferred a clear strat sound to the darker Les Paul sound, and the P-90's provide a really cool alternative. You get a pile of gain that breaks up nicely while staying nice and bright (not *as* bright as singles, but not far from it.) I've never had pickups like these before, and I'm getting lots of neat tones out of them. One of these days I'm gonna change my evil ways... one of these days... http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Band.gifhttp://www.weidenbach.net/images/storage/headbang.gif

Dave da Dude
I have a question (I don't have a P-90 guitar, .. yet). Why does "everyone" get so hyped up about the two humbucker configuration and Les Paul "sound" when the P-90's are (IMHO) better? I got into the (mistaken) opinion that since I now had a (great) Strat that was three Single Coils; I now needed a two Humbucker (LP type) to round out my collection. I played the Godin LG-Hmb (two HB's) right next to the Godin LG-P90 and as much as I wanted to like the HB's better; the P90's win! Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
fantasticsound
Dave, I think the smooth distortion sounds that can be had from HB's are why they were (and are) coveted by many. In recent years, however, people have learned to create timbres with more character that have as much gain as was previously possible only with HB's because of the noise issues with singles. High gain will always be the domain of HB's, regardless of how much many of us appreciate P-90 distortion sounds. But Humbuckers sound "blah" to me for clean tones. Why do you think the middle positions of HB equipped instruments utilize only one coil from each p'up. It's because these positions on single equipped guitars get the humbucking advantages anyway, so HB guitars can gain more character by picking up sound in the inbetween positions more like a single. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

I think most people prefer humbuckers because of the hum cancellation....which is a big plus for a live band. Though strats are single coils too, they are not wound with as much wire as a P-90.....and therefore you don't have the hum that is associated witha P-90. And as has been stated....humbuckers can't be beat for a smooth, bluesy type clean sound. If you are a nut like me, you have them all ....(P-90 guitar, humbucker guitar, single coil guitar, MIDI guitar....etc.)
southpawstrat
My main guitar is a Strat but I have an Aerodyne Telecaster with a P-90 in the neck. Man, that thing really rips! My Strat pickups are relatively thick sounding but this thing is juicy. "I look for whatever will cut the deepest... whammy bars and wah wah pedals can't be used as just gimmicks. daddyelmis
I just put some Harmonic Design Z90's in my Epi LP, replacing a JB bridge and 59 neck. I am complete convert -- as stated in my separate thread on the subject, I've realized I'm just not a humbucker guy. These pickups sound great, are somewhat noisy (but I'm used to this from all my single coils except the EMG actives). www.ruleradio.com "Fame is like death: We will never know what it looks like until we've reached the other side.
