Boggs
She works with the developmentally disabled and she was attacked today by one of the guests. She was choked almost to the point of unconsciousness and does not know how she got free. I cannot go into specifics, but she was covered in blood and vomit from this guest and traumatized pretty significantly. Keeping her in your thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. She seems physically okay right now though... A String
Working with the developmentally disabled can be a very rewarding experience, but one that is certainly fraught with danger. I'm glad to hear she is physically fine and I hope that this experience hasn't soured her to the joys of helping others. BiC
WOW! Tell her that we are praying that she will not allow this to stifle this gift God has blessed her with. I will be praying that she recovers from this both physically and emotionally. Tedster
I echo Cooper's and BiC's sentiments. Often, the most rewarding things also carry an element of risk. Having raised a developmentally disabled daughter, and having been in contact with quite a few people with disabilities...I would like to think that your daughter's incident was indeed rare. I hope that she agrees that the benefits to those that truly need her help far outweigh the risks. Blessings and peace... Boggs
Thank you, folks. She was working the overnight as she usually does but this occurred near the end of her shift when there was another co-worker there (thank God). She was choked to near unconsciousness but only has bruising and scratches apparent. She is awaiting testing of the guest for hepatitus B&C and AIDS testing but the family is not required to divulge the results of the HIV tests. The guest is over 30. Her blood, vomit, and mucous had contacted open wounds and the mougth and eyes of my daughter, so we need to get results to see if gamma globulin injections will be necessary to protect her and whether to start an AIDS coctail or not. My daughter is aware of the risks of the job and it will not deter her. She was pretty shaken as she got home covered with blood and body fluids and from having her clothes ripped from her (she was wrapped in a blanket when she got home. My wife picked her up and I met her at home). She's already doing much better and we are just waiting to hear if she has to go for her shots or not. NMcGuitar
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your daughter, and the rest of of your family. What a horrible ordeal to have to go through. I hope this event won't squash her desire to continue the good works she has been doing. All the best to her. Boggs
Excellent news... HIV came out negative! Now, it's just waiting for the hepatitus C results. Don't worry, this incident will not deter her. She has already assured me of that. She understands the risks fully and is really impressed how her training had kicked her into auto-response and how well it and she handled the situation. She will use it, as she does any adversity in her life, to bolster her confidence and as a tool to help her the next time it happens. She's an absolutely amazing young woman of almost 23. Reverse the Curse
my mom works with cognitively challenged kids. From what I understand its not one of those jobs that you can do just for money (partly cause the money sucks ). You truly have to want to help these people, and give them the opportunities to suceed and be a positive member of society. The forumite formerly known as Cooper. jbote
I am so glad to hear of the good news so far, and hope and pray for a speedy recovery for your daughter. She also has my admiration for being so committed to her work. My youngest son, while not mentally disadvantaged, has a serious speech/auditory disability, and I thank my lucky stars that the people who work with him on a daily basis at school are like your daughter - completely committed to his daily improvement. With their help he continues to make big leaps. It sounds like your daughter is very, very special. All the best to her, you, and your family. Super 8
Originally posted by Tedster: I would like to think that your daughter's incident was indeed rare. That's certainly been my experience. I worked with DD for about 5 years. In that time, I only heard of one incident that was truly dangerous....the resident threatened his peers and a staff member with a knife. Nobody was harmed, but he was shipped off to a state institution for that. In my experience, there were LOTS of aggressive outbursts. But most of the time it came in the form of self-abuse. If you got hurt, it was usually during the course of trying to protect the resident from himself (i.e. putting him in a restraint, or keeping him from bashing his head against something). Generally, it was a minor scrape or a bruise....nothing serious. I'm betting that the person who hurt Bogg's daughter was pretty high-functioning. Any time I have ever heard of truly dangerous situation, it always involved someone who was high-functioning. The lower-functioning people are more aggressive, but it's never directed at anything really. Usually when they get pissed, they just bite their wrist and slap themselves in the head. In most cases, you can ignore it. But in some cases you have to act, because they really will hurt themselves. And those are the times you run the risk of getting hurt yourself. I worked with the under 21 crowd. As has been mentioned, it was very rewarding, and often very enjoyable work. But, it also paid pretty lousy. To those who think they could never do this, let me tell you that I surprised myself. I went in thinking I'd give it a shot, and if I didn't like it, I wasn't going to stay very long. D.D. people look strange and act stranger, but after a pretty short time you start to become familiar with their personalities. They are a lot like 'regular' people, but everything about them is more pronounced. They have TONS of personality. After a while I didn't notice the things about them that initially put me off, and really developed a bond with them. I learned a lot of lessons about people by working with D.D. And, it was a great experience. I'd recommend it to anyone....especially anyone planning on having kids. Give your daughter my best, Boggs. Werewolf by Night
I used to know a girl who had some bad bite scars from a couple of similar enough incidents, and a couple of bad horror-stories to go with 'em. I guess it's not usually that way, but when it is, it's pretty scary... Anyways, it's very commendable that your daughter does that as a job, and moreso that she's not deterred by this. HOWEVER, if she did decide that she needed a break from it, for a bit or for good, I'd not question her judgement one iota! I know BiC meant what he said as positive encouragment (don't mean to pick on you, BiC, just a handy example! Keep on truckin, BiC!), but I have to say that such a decision would be hers and hers alone; whichever way she decided to go, would have to be taken seriously by anyone else. I'm glad she's alright so far, too! May any and all further news on the matter be good, and may the whole thing fade away and result only in good things somehow!
