Turn the song upside down

Billster

Recommended Posts

I got thinking about this after seeing Hippys acoustic set list with Master of Puppets, and such. Like I said over there, a female "folksinger" acquaintance of mine does Guns 'n Roses "You Should Be Mine" all the time, and there's another artist (I think her name is Em Gryner?) that did a whole album of rock songs in a Tori Amos piano/vocal style; stuff like "Crazy Train" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me"

A woman singing Pour Some Sugar on Me with those lyrics, warps the direction of the song, and turns the sexism of a lot of heavy rock on its head in a sly, clever way.

I always wanted to hear Pete Townshends Rough Boys with all the gay overtones, sung by a woman Joan Jett perhaps. That would be double-double entendre or something. Or Joan could sing it as Rough Girls :freak:

Anyway, what songs would you like to turn upside down?

we have a game at work where we sing heavy metal or classic rock tunes like a cheap lounge singer. some tunes actually sound good. this all started when we heard Joe Piscapo do the Frank Sinatra impression with a metal band backing him, i think the song was Witchcraft.

I always thought that you could take Jann Arden's song "Insensive" and change the pronouns in the lyrics to sing the song from the perspective of the guy who is "Insensitive". The song becomes downright evil when you do that.

Read changed lyrics below.

Paul

Oh, you really should have known

By the time I drove you home

By the vagueness in my eyes

Casual good-byes

By the chill in my embrace

The expression on my face

That told you

I might have some advice to give

On how to be

Insensitive

Oh, I probably wont remember you

Its probably ancient history

You're one of the chosen three

Who went ahead and fell for me

you're out of vogue, you're out of touch

You fell too fast, You feel too much

You thought that I might have

Some advice to give on how to be

Insensitive

Peace,

Paul

That first verse is very, very, scary.

I thought that was Sid Vicious doing that version...

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

You are correct sir!

Speaking of the Sex Pistols and turning the song upside down, I was once in a band that did a "country" medley of the following songs: "God Save the Queen," "Running With the Devil' and "Helter Skelter."

This was always a hit with the audience.

You may be right. I guess I thought all Sex Pistols were interchangeable!

My son and I heard this hillbilly version of Another Brick in the Wall and we busted a gut laughing.

The idea of simple mountain folk explaining why they don't need education was quite a turnaround on the establishment focus originally intended in the song.

Bad Co. Feel Like Makin' Love... crank that one up to 45rpm speed and see how difficult it'd be to spit those lyrics out and keep a straight face. :D

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

I used to play a reggae-ish version of Another Brick In The Wall with my old band. I'll never know how good (or bad) it sounded as I never managed to get a recording of us doing it. Somehow we always managed to mess it up when the record button got pressed (good thing perhaps!).

It doesn't even look like Marty ;) I never would have guessed it. He looks a little like Carlos Cavazo there with longer darker hair  I guess because I pretty much stopped listening and going to VH shows after Diamond Dave left.

The Hillbilly "Another Brick...." is by a Canadian group called Luther Wright and the Wrongs. They did the entire "The Wall" album as a Bluegrass album. It works. It's not parody, it's not satire. It's just some very creative thinking ouside the box.

I used to play in a group that did Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" as a bluegrass tune. Lyrically, the song works. We featured the banjo on it, IIRC.

And yeah Billster, my pronoun inversion on "Insensitive" is scary. I wish I didn't have to take credit, (accept blame), for thinking of it.

Peace,

Paul

oh man, some of my favorites are rap songs "turned upsidedown." this band called the gourds do a really nice bluegrass version of snoop dogg's "gin and juice" and this local band around here used to do a rock version of nelly's "hot in here." the guitarist from that band also had a country-fied acoustic version of "straight out of compton" that was hilarious. he knew all the words to all these rap songs and he'd just strum them out on guitar, it was great.
Then you'll never hear surf music again...

On a limited edition EP, Chevelle did Depeche Mode's "It's No Good" in their own style of rock. It was the type of cover that made the original sound like a techno remix of the cover.

A band called Precious Death did a grungier remake (with a male singer) of No Doubts "Spiderwebs".
