flippymagoo
Okay so with this weeks pay check I have enough money to buy whatever cab I want. I was originally going for a 2x12, but after a recent trip to the guitar stores I found that I really like the 4x12's bigger tone better. I played a Marshall 1960 A and B,but I really did NOT like the G12T-75 speakers. They were way too harsh and almost fizzy when soloing on them. I think Vintage 30's may be more my thing. So with my rare wad of cash I've managed to save up, and I'm looking at more expensive 412 cabs, like the Marshall 1960BV (vintage 30's) and the Randall XLT cabs. My question is -- they are really pricey, but are they worth it? I'm not a gear-switching-freak, I like to buy things and keep them as long as possible, but I'm wondering quality-wise can you get the same craftsmanship in less expensive cabs that have Vintage 30's. This is my first stack, so I was just curious what your experiences have been with stacks concerning quality, tone differences and prices. Thanks for helping the newbie. Guitarzan
i believe most speakers need to be broken in a bit before they really sound sweet. if the cab you tried was new it may sound better after the speakers are worked abit. but i am a stupid guitar player so you may want more opinions on this matter. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Gabriel E.
Those G12T-75s can definitley be harsh. They're great for metal though. Both Carvin and Avatar make 4x12 Vintage30 equipped cabs with comparable quality to the Marshall and Randall you're looking at for a lot less money (cuz you're buying direct from the manufacturer). Mesa Boogie also makes V30 equipped cabs but they cost more than the Marshalls. You want a good cab that's made from plywood, not MDF. flippymagoo
Thanks. I'm looking into the Carvin 4x12 legacy cab. Looks sweet, only problem is it's 16 Ohms. My head is 4 and 8 Ohms. How hard is it to rewire something like that? Yeah, I was smart enough to look into cab construction when I started this quest and only go for plywood. Particle board is evil. >
madgrinder
If the cab is 16 ohms, it most likely has 16 ohm speakers wired in series/parallel (that is...both top speakers wired together in series, and bottoms wired together in series, then each pair wired to the jack 32 + 32 = 16). To get a 4 ohm setup, wire all four speakers seperately to the jack. 16 + 16 + 16 + 16 = 4. Hope that helps... ...it's Mr Stabby, da da da da da daaaah, da da da da da da daaaah... Gifthorse
Choose whatever you like but I will add that Orange makes incredible cabs. At least they did the last time I checked. They sound head and shoulders above anything I have heard. Randall makes some nice ones and so does VHT. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
