Which leg do you rest your guitar on when sitting?

I used to get really bad lower backaches when playing for long periods while sitting. It's probably because after a while, I would start to slump forward. I switched to holding the guitar in a more "classical" guitar manner, resting it on my left leg & using a small box (or sometimes even my other foot) as a footstool. Since switching, the backaches have gone away and my hand postion is a lot more comfortable. Anyone else hold it this way?

I usually rest it on my right leg, have no problem with it, for me just keeping correct posture while sitting helps alot, if it helps get a chair with a backrest but no arms, thats what I use and it works perfecrly, when I rest it on my left leg it just feels not "normal" to me

I find the classical sitting postion more comfortable than other options, but I also think that the size and the shape of the guitar might make a difference. I've played steel string acoustic the other way and found it OK, but perfer the classical way with that one too.

In addition to foot rests they make "pillows" that are contoured for the guitar to sit on where the pillow sits on the leg, and they make a thing called a A-Frame that raises the guitar up. The advantage of using these devices is that they allow you to sit with both feet square on the ground. I used to find the A frame better, but I've gone back to my foot stool. Sitting on the edge of the chair as opposed to back on it like when just hanging out makes a difference too.

when i do sit to play i rest the guitar on my right leg and there are no problems, maybe cause im still a strapping young lad :thu:

Most of the time when I play tho, I'm standing. I dont know, I just need to be able to roam about and move about rythmically.

For years I rested on my right leg (I'm right-handed player). I studied classical for time and I have adpted the left leg position ever since. It is more comfortable to me and seems to offer a more efficient access to the guitar.

I use my right leg, but I often stand the guitar up on my knee and the lay the guitar back slightly. It's almost like cradling a baby only my arm isn't in the bent postition. For those of you who are trying this right now, you are either going to say "oooohhh I see", or "What????" I'm sorry I can't give a better discription for those of you saying "What???"

I like the more classical approach of having the neck closer to me and it seems easier on my wrists too.

Most of the time I rest the guitar on my left leg, but sometimes it's on my right leg too. It depends on what types of music and guitar I'm playing. For strumming I sometimes use my right leg, and while I'm playing steel stringed acoustics I rest it on my right leg. With more advanced playing the guitar's on the left leg, and I sometimes use something to keep the foot on. (In my homestudio I use a drawer. Just pull it out a bit and then toss my foot on it.) ;)

Right leg for me. Although, when I got my music degree my principal instrument was classical guitar so for 4 years I got a good dose of proper classical posture . My teacher used to yank my wrists and arms into the right position if I got lazy. There is no question that resting the guitar on the left leg provides better access to the fretboard through better hand/body positioning. But it can seem quite awkward until you get used to it. But currently, I'm right leg and a bit slouchy (is that a word?). Later. S.

I'm a mix. My electrics I tend to rest on my left leg, while my acoustics tend to sit on my right. I also rest my bass on my right (I think that's mainly for eas of reaching the top of the neck).

In a slightly off-topic tangent: I also find that I stand with my weight on my right leg most of the time. I had been noticing this for a while, and couldn't quite figure out why... until I was standing with my guitar. I almost always keep my weight on my right leg - trying to keep it on the left just feels all wrong to me.

May all your thoughts be random!
