J J
So i'm jamming to Zeppelin's The Wanton Song (god, i love that song) and my sister comes in my room and asks me if i want a job. Now i'm thinking, "oh great, i'm probably going to have to cut grass or something." Turns out my sister's friends dad wants me to teach him how to play guitar I guess he's thinking about me teaching him three days a week oh baby! i cant wait i guess i better find some stuff to teach him I've never tought anyone for more than a couple of minutes, but three days a week...damn! Can you guys give me some teaching tips or anything They'd be much appreciated! (playing cream, "i'm so glad")
Tedster
Three days a week? Wow. Hmmmm...I've never done that sort of teaching schedule. I'd say do it for a week, see how he progresses...then assess whether a "thrice weekly" schedule will be of benefit to him. Teahead
Yeah I'd have to agree. It takes a week of most peoples lives to digest an hours worth of instruction. Often the student needs to gain an understanding of the material, mostly it just takes a long time to master your first chords. Maybe you could schedule one lesson per week, but call in with him at convenient times to check on his progress? Dumping new stuff on him every couple of days may get a bit hectic for him. Great news anyway. Best of luck with it and be sure to keep us posted. Tea. Pedal Clips
Chris. Werewolf by Night
Perhaps you could begin using the extra hours going through a practice regimen with him, helping to instill in him good practice routines as a matter of habit. And, to just jam a little with him, helping to build confidence. Then as he seems to be "getting it", you could back off on the superfluous lesson-time. That could be a win-win situation... A String
Like Cavman said, I think practice time is the only way to get three days in. Even the quickest learner will need a week for one hour of learning to sink in and to master it enough to move on to the next thing. If you teach new stuff, three days a week, to a beginner, they will start to forget stuff, get flustered and eventually give up. A String
Have him get a copy of THIS book and bring it with him to his lessons. It has chord charts through the songs so he can learn to play the chords and then bring the book home to practice. This is a great book. (There are two versions of this book. This one is for beginners. The cover is brown and it is an "Easy Guitar" book. -------------------------------------------- Edited for link problems Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
