BiC
I have a piece of crap Compaq Presario 1400. It's acting up- out of nowhere my cursor will freeze whether I'm typing or when I step away for a minute and come back. Then I have to beat on the "fingerpad" to get it going again. Also, sometimes when I load a different website it will do the same thing. What's happening? A String
When you say the cursor is freezing, do you mean the pointer or the text cursor? Does the rest of the computer respond? Next time it happens, try clicking on the "Cap Lock" button and see if the light goes on and off. (If the computer is freezeing, it will not come on.) If the light works and it's just the pointer that is freezing, the problem could be with your touch pad. Can you offer any more info on the problem? PeeMonkey
Usually this problem is caused by computer lag, can you give us a brief overview of your laptop specs? The RAM, MHZ, etc. Usually when it freezes up it is due to a lack or shortage of memory used to run a certain program, or something is running in the background which is eating up alot of your resources and your memory. Usually anti-virus programs on old computers cuase this or just a virus is running, or sometimes just too many processes are going on and unused programs are eating up resources. Best bet would be to clear off all of your unused programs, and you can also use alt +ctrl + delete to bring up a task menu which can show you which processes are ran through the computer. If your comp is about 200mhz or less then its nothing to worry about, its just a old computer which needs some cleaning up

Then when I beat on the touchpad, that seems to unfreeze it. But sometimes it takes a couple good beatings to work. I'm at work now, away from my laptop. So next time it does it, I'll see if the light comes on when I press the caps lock. Thanx! But off the top of my head, I believe it is a 575 MHZ. I've seen them on EBAY. Lemme see if I can find one... HERE IT IS But I do know it's not 600 MHZ. I'm pretty sure the memory is 64 MB. When I boot it up, I am sure to shut down those background programs that I don't use. Once I get home, I'll be able to give you a better idea of the % running/free. Thanx! BiC
One other thing guys... my screen is getting loose too. It also "flickers" off/on from time to time when I move the laptop or move the screen. I'm wondering if a spring is broke??? But why the flickering??? I mean, if I tilt my laptop backward... the screen WILL go ALL THE WAY back- on the level as the keyboard. I won't waste a lot of money on it since I'm going to get a new one. But, I may take care of it if it's an easy fix. A String
Let's see, first problem. Your CPU speed is fine, but the ram is a little lacking. 64 is one step up from the least amount of ram your computer will hold. Next time it freezes up, look and see if the HDD (Hard Drive) light is going. It is possible that it's freezing up because it's trying to load or run something like peemonkey suggested? If this is the case, the HDD light will be flashing (Or on continuously) while it's working and then as soon as the light is off, it will "free up" your touch pad again. As for the screen, sometimes the little spring can come lose, I'm not familiar with the exact model you are running so I don't want to give you any advice on fixing it...Your best bet is to see if you can noodle around with it (DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE). If you can't get it back on, you may have to get someone at a repair shop to do it for you. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Programgirl
Here are some useful steps: 1. Disk clean up (Start / programs / accessories / system tools / disk cleanup) 2. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools / Internet Options, and on the pop up click on both 'Delete Cookies' and 'Delete Files' 3. Go back to Start / programs / accessories / system tools and run 'Disk Defragmenter' 4. Finally, now that your computer is clean and packed, you might want to tweak your startup scripts. You can do this by right-clicking on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop and selecting 'Manage' From there go to 'Services and Applications / Services'. Change the startup type to either 'Manual' or 'Disabled'. BE CAREFUL! If you don't know what something is, you can try looking it up here: Computer Tasks . This list is for 2000 and up, but there should be some that apply to 98 as well. One last thing - don't bang on the keyboard, you're only making the cpu work harder. Good luck! A String
Judging by your specs, I would say that the problem is not lack of ram. 64 megs of ram is a very small amount when running WinXp because the Operating system is very hard on memory and CPU. You are running Win98 and it was set up to run with much less ram. It's starting to look like a hardware issue... Let's find out for sure before jummping the gun though, next time it does happen, let me know about the lights, (HDD light inparticular). This would be a dead give away that it is a preformance issue and not a hardware issue. Like programgirl stated, cleaning your computer might help out if it's a preformance issue. A lot of computer lag problems have been fixed by Defragging the Hard Drive. The defrag proccess will take a long time, so be prepared to wait an hour or two. Before you run the defrag, be sure to disable your screen saver. -Right click on the desktop and pick properties. -Select the "screen saver" tab. -Click on the drop down menu and select "none". -Click on apply. Also be sure that the hard drive and screen don't "sleep" by selecting "Advanced" and set any one of the menus that have a time amount in them (15 mins etc.) to "never". (I'm sorry I'm running WinXp so I can't remember what the boxes say.) Once you've done all of this, clean and defrag as Programgirl suggested. Keep me updated on your progress. Lee Flier
Just about all Compaq and HP computers come installed with a lot of SPYWARE. And you may have picked up more along the way somewhere. This can cause the kind of lag you're experiencing - it did for me awhile back. Get thee to http://www.lavasoft.de and download and run Ad-Aware - it'll find the nasty spyware and get rid of it for ya.

A String
There are a few suspicious proccesses in there BiC... I think to be safe, the best course of action is to get a good spyware remover. Here is a link to the best free one out there: Spybot Click on the big green button that says "Download Now". Make sure the program is updated and then run the scan and let it fix the problems. This should remove all of the spyware and addware from your computer. Remember to let me know if you see the Hard drive light going if it happens again. In the mean time, run that program and let me know how it goes(How many it finds). Once it's done, run "Hijack this" again and paste the results so I can compare. We'll get this problem solved BiC! A String
I think the main problem is the sheer volume of things you have running. Most of the things in that list a programs that are running in the back ground. We need to do some cleaning... First off. Of all of the little icons in your systray (The little box with the clock in it), how many of those things do you want or need to have starting up automatically? Right click on them an open running programs. Look for the option to "Load on startup" and remove the check. There may be some things you are used to having so in this case, you can leave those. The best way to clean up is this: -click on "start"-"programs"-"accessories"-"system tools"-System Information". -From the tabs at the top, click on "tools" -then (I belive it's called) "system configuration utility" -click on the "start up" tab. The only programs that you HAVE to have in their are Explorer and Systray. Anything else is extra. Remove the check marks out of ones you don't want and then apply and restart. This should fix your problem. If you find something that used to start up is gone and you miss it, you can always go back to that menu and reenable it by putting it's check back. I know this seems overwhelming, but if you need any help (Mainly because of my crappy explanation,) please let me know! - Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
Dak Lander
Jeez BiC. You've more crap running on that one box than I do on all of my computers (6) combined. Shoes
How ironic! I come here to get away from this sort of thing. It's part of what I do all week between everything else that gets dumped on my desk. It's one of those spend a week and chase it down problems that can be virus or spyware related and is simply busying up the system resources. As mentioned Spybot should be run and Stinger should be run as well just to get rid of the latest pile-o-crap being hurled to the web. You can go to Compaq/HP and they have a listing of older system and an archive of all the patches and drivers issued for you to download. Drivers can get corrupted, looking for the latest version for your operating system is a good idea. 98 & your specs should run well and with a high speed connection to the internet.. you'd find a faster computer does very little to enhance the experience. (provided your browser isn't netscape 7.1) 4.79 would run great. The film strip style connection that feeds your screen will stress out over time and start to crack. This will be a pain to deal with if it has a direct connection with the display panel (most do) This means a new screen is in order. (Not worth the cost for an old system) (The are lots of parts on eBay for the diy computer guy) Do you use a serial (9 pin)or PS/2 (din connector) as your regular mouse? ... I was sorry to hear that your car was broken into tomorrow night and that laptop with the flakes mouse was stolen. take care and good luck. I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
