Dennyf
As I've posted on other occasions, I recently got an Agile 2500 LP goldtop w/P-90s. While really happy with the way it sounded, I wasn't quite as happy with the way it played. Had some fretboard unevenness that made it impossible to get the action down to where I like to have it. But it sounded so nice, I still liked to play it even with slightly high action. Couldn't really complain for two bucks, right? But being finicky, I recently took it to Kenny Marshall of AL&M music in Norfolk, VA. Kenny really knows his stuff, and is a super-nice guy to boot. Aside from schmoes like me, he also does setup work for folks like Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews, Phil Keaggy, etc. I was slightly embarrassed to even bring him a cheap Korean knock-off, but Kenny's more about the quality of the materials than the label, and I wanted his evaluation of the instrument to either confirm or destroy my less-informed opinions. His initial evaluation of the guitar was that it was as good as any of the Pacific-rim guitars sold under the brand-names. He felt there was enough fret available to compensate for the uneven fingerboard, so that's what he did along with a complete setup. The guitar plays wonderfully now. If you're anywhere near the Tidewater area of Virginia, TAKE YOUR GUITAR TO THIS MAN! This is the third guitar I've had Kenny work on, and I can't say enough good things about the quality of his work. So the point is this: When I went back to pick it up, he commented favorably on the overall quality of the guitar, particularly the pickups. He thought I must have replaced them (nope). In short he said, "That's a really great-sounding guitar." And that's what it's all about, right? band link: bluepearlband.com music, lessons, gig schedules at dennyf.com STURGEON'S LAW --98% of everything is bullshit. NMcGuitar
Actually, I'm going to be in Norfolk in 3 or 4 weeks. I don't need any guitar work done right now (and my guy up here is A-One, too ), but I might stop in just to check out the shop. Where exactly is it? Since you're gonna be in the area, check the Blue Pearl calendar and come say hello! In three weeks, we're at Goodfella's in Hampton (just across the HRBT from Norfolk) and Smackwater Jack's in VaBeach, and in four weeks we're at Greenie's in the Ocean View section of Norfolk. And I'll be doing my solo thing a number of times on the VaBeach oceanfront at the 18th St. Cafe. Oops, I just hijacked my own thread. Anyway, uh, "Agiles!" . . . carry on. band link: bluepearlband.com music, lessons, gig schedules at dennyf.com STURGEON'S LAW --98% of everything is bullshit. mstreck
I've been looking at the AL3000 Prestige Goldtop for weeks. A friend of mine borrowed one (2500) and played a gig with it last weekend. He liked it so much that he decided to buy one. Then you post this thread (I must have missed your others). I think I'm going to have to get you guys to talk to my wife. I was "cut off" from buying more guitars after I bought my acoustic a few weeks ago. But I just might stand a chance with you guys backing me. Solidarity, brothers! Mike Petting Hendrix Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked in the head by an iron boot? Of course you don't--no one does--that never happens.
