Argggghhhh frustration

Guitarzan

man i am going crazy. when i bought my AES 620 it came with 9's. i put a set of 10's on there and now i can't get a decent setup where i like the tone and feel. i have never had a problem setting my guitars up before. maybe its all in my head. i can grab anyones guitar and adjust to guage and string height with no problems but lately this guitar is bugging the hell out of me. no matter what i try, i get a plinky tone with a weak fundamental note. my action is far from low and there is enough relief. maybe its the strings? if my dealer ever get the DR's in that i ordered i might be OK. are any of you so set in your string brand that other brands just won't do?

I LIKE DRs...but like you - they're sometimes hard to find (until SamAsh came to town). I usually get Daddario XLs, but been thinking about some ghs boomers when the new Rondo comes in.

Sometimes the guitar just dont work with higher guages...Bruce (the lead player ) tried to put 10's on his Hagstromm 335 - and the same thing happened to him..It just didn't sound right! Go Figure!

Not to rub it in, but I had no problem finding DRs near me. Actually all three guitar places near me all have them. On top of that I got DR Pure Blues for $5.50 a set. Is that a good price??

FYI due to my absence from the guitar playing world, I never heard of DR strings until people from this forum HIGHLY recommended them, so I made sure the place that did my loooooong overdue set-up had them.

Check with your local music stores. They may, as one of my local stores did, stock the strings for you. The store that now stocks them are charging a bit more than the Guitar Center but it's only fifty cents more so I buy them there now.

If nothing else, Just Strings dot com sells DRs too, though for more than what I pay.

I sent an e-mail to DR (drstaff@drstrings.com) inquiring about dealers near me since I recently moved to another state and they got me in touch with the DR distributor in my state in less than two hours.

You can also call them here:

They claim the strings are 50% off.
That's a good price as Guitarzan said. The 50% is subjective and likely off of a list price, but who's? My local store charges the same for that string with a tagged list of $11.95 so there it's over 50% off.

The Rare Phosphor Bronze acoustic strings I pay $6.50 for are listed at $12.95 in my local store but higher at the Guitar Center where I used to pay $6.00 a set.

I have just put the first set of Pure Blues on my SRV strat after all the rave reviews here. Still trying to decide if they are that much different from the Dean Markley Blue Steels. I think I need another gig on them before I can tell. I can get them for $5.25 every day at Elderly.

Once I thought I saw you, in a crowded, hazy, bar........

I've had good luck with Just Strings . I discovered them looking for E9 and C6 pedal steel strings. I saw DRs there and had seen them complemented so much on this forum that I ordered a few sets of 10s for my Tele and G&L gotta say I love them. The service was great. It is best to get several sets so the postage doesn't offset the savings.

You might say you're getting your guitar a DR. Like, you know, a Doctor. DR. Dr.? Dr. String? Dr. DR?

Anyone? Hahaha? :(

haha one ups :D

Luckily I live in Diamond Bar California about 6 mins away from the Brea Guitar Center, and a new Sam Ash is opening up like 5 minutes away, also the local music store is 2 mins away from my house, I love my house.

And also regarding the DR's, I just recently bought a set of 10's for around that price of 5.50, gotta love the orange county tax of 7.75 compared to Los Angeles' 8.25 ouch!

I'm having a similar problem with a Hamer Californian Quilt that I just bought.

It came with 9-42 and I play 10-46.

I've screwed around with it for 4 days and stil have crappy action.

I normally set all my guitars up myself, but i think this ones off to the repair shop.

How can we fight ignorance and apathy?

Who knows! Who cares!

Some guitars seem to sound best with little or no relief, with the truss-rod set so the neck's quite straight. Going to a heavier gauge set of strings might be pulling more relief in, bowing the neck more, and actually losing a little tone to the neck's acting like an acoustic see-saw... seriously, it sounds strange but it's true, it happens, varying from guitar to guitar.

As for string brand, I love DR Pure Blues pure nickel-wrap strings in .011" through .050" on my Les Paul; I'd consider their Tite Fits- same round-core construction, but with nickel plated winding- for a brighter tone on a different guitar.

Caev - I usually tease you about using heavy strings, but I'm thinking about switching up now. I've been using the .010's for only about 6-8 months, but I've been playing so much lately that I think I could handle the higher guage now.... Go figure...

BTW - $5.50 for Pure Blues sounds just about right. I pay somewhere around $5.30 (I'm not sure exactly since I usually get a few sets of strings at once, and by the time they figure the tax I don't really feel like doing the math :P ).

May all your thoughts be random!
