JUDAS PRIEST's NEW CD

BiC

Recommended Posts

I may be behind the times a little, but for those of you into classic heavy metal, you probably heard by now that Rob Halford has rejoined Judas Priest. They have a new recording due out some time this year that is supposed to sound like classic Priest. There is a really good article in September's issue of Guitar World that I just finished reading.

I've not been too keen on "traditional" heavy metal stuff, BUT I'd like to "try-em-on".

What would be a good single disc sampling of Judas Priest and Megadeath?

Are they the best sampling of "Heavy Metal"?

Or am I completely out-dated and the term "Heavy" has been dropped from "Metal"?

What is/was KISS considered?

If this is all too far OT, I'll take it to a new thread. Let me know.

Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

Dave , older Priest may be right up your alley. they really were not that heavy in the begining. for Megadeth, i would say my favorite is "rust in peace".

for Judas Priest...british steel and sad wings of destiny are excellent older releases.

Judas Priest got progressively heavier as time went on. Hell bent for leather has a good solid album, one song on that album is the beautiful ballad "before the dawn". great tune and very unheavy metal.

I second "Rust In Peace" for Megadeth.

BTW, you most probably will NOT like the new Megadeth stuff.

For JP, I recommend "British Steel". :thu:

Hey Dave, take a listen to a few of these sound clips:

British Steel

"Living After Midnight" is not available to listen to, but it's one of the best songs on the CD. You may have already heard it, though.

Megadeth doesn't have any sound clips for "Peace Sells" on amazon. But if you like British Steel, you should like "Peace Sells"- although it is a lot heavier.

This question would take a year and a day to answer fully since EVERYONE has their own opinion on the best. In addition, there are sooooooo many different types of "Heavy Metal" e.g., glam metal, speed metal, nu-metal (today's version), death metal, power metal, black metal, 80's metal, 90's metal etc. etc.

Or am I completely out-dated and the term "Heavy" has been dropped from "Metal"?

Again, it depends on who you talk to.

What is/was KISS considered?

KISS (my first favorite band, the reason I play guitar, the reason I bought a Les Paul many moons ago etc.) is hard rock to me, but that can be argued forever too. Then after the "Lick It Up" album and before the "Revenge" album, they were absolutely DREADFUL! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/im/imho.gif

As far as Judas Priest, although I like them and played some of their stuff when my band played covers waaaaay back in the day, I never really cared for the sound of their earlier studio work until "Screaming for Vengeance". The earlier music just wasn't full enough. I preferred their live album, "Unleashed in the East", although "British Steel" does have four excellent songs on it that my old band played. We just did better versions http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_200.gif

Useless sidenote: my very first concert when I was 11 or 12 was KISS and Judas Priest opened up for them. I of course was there to see KISS and never heard of Judas Priest at the time, but I was shocked and appalled that people were there to see Judas Priest and quite a few people left the show after Judas Priest played.

With Megadeth, I wasn't their biggest fan, but I did like quite a few songs. Personally, I like "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?".

See it can take forever to answer this ;)

Hey Dave, I meant to recommend "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying", and NOT "Rust In Peace".

But don't get me wrong, "Rust In Peace" is an excellent recording as well.

Hey Dudes!

I'd just like to add that IMHO, Judas Priests 'Screaming for Vengeance' is one of the best metal albums of all time. Still love BritSteel, but I give Screaming the nod. Just an opinion!

What really sucks is Priest just played here with Ozzy/Sabbath. Ten years ago, I'd have been front row for that lineup.

If any of you concert goers get a chance, see this one! That's a keeper.

Blizzard of Oz, Diary of a madman..OZZY

Sad wings of destiny, British steel, Screaming for vengeance..Judas priest

Number of the beast ...Iron maiden

The warning... Queensryche

Master of puppets Metalica

these are a few more , and by no means does this suggest that other releases of the above artists are not good.

not many people mention "the warning" by Queensryche, but i love it!

"nm156" is an awesome tune about machines taking over.

"no sanctuary" is a prime example of Geoff Tates lungs and skill as a vocalist.

I agree! ALL Queensryche CDs are SUPERB, their latest, "Tribe" is great too! They have very few, if any songs that I don't care for (which is tough coming from me). From "The Warning" CD, I feel "Roads to Madness" and "Take Hold of the Flame" shows Geoff's vocal prowess too.

I saw them at L'Amour in Brooklyn during "The Warning" tour. In case you don't know, L'Amour was the greatest rock club in NY. Queensryche was/is aMaZiNg!! :thu:

I also saw Queensryche and Dream Theater last year. THAT was one of the best shows I ever saw. The best part was when both bands jammed to a Dream Theater song and "Take Hold of the Flame" to close the show. :thu::thu::thu:
