PeeMonkey
I have been looking at a bunch of amps recently and came across the sovtek mig 50 amp, I saw it on ebay and it was pretty cheap but I have never actually seen the product in real life or tried it out. Anyone play this one before, comments please. Thanks!!
picker
I had one about ten years ago, and they sound great. The reason I got rid of mine was I heard they were unreliable in terms of durability. The Russians used cheesy transformers and other components in their construction, so they might last a long time or a very short time, and no telling which without expensive tests, and maybe not even then. But I liked the way mine sounded when the volume was at about 2:00. I had a 4X10 Marshall cab that I ran it through, and it was a combination that kicked serious butt. What are they going for on Ebay? Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
Gabriel E.
Do a forum search. There have been a couple of Sovtek threads over the last couple of months. These amps are actually built very ruggedly, save for the cheapo pots. The thick circuit board is shock mounted and the transformers are massive heavy duty units (at least on mine). Solder joints are all clean. Tubes, fuse holders and jacks are all chassis mounted and connect to the board with flying leads. The older Mig-50s are probably the best deal going for plexi-marshall clones. They sound awesome. The Mig 50H Midget is more of a modern sounding high gain amp. Don't know how it's constructed.
