Sakurai Classical (Opinions Please!)

Fightin Engineer

Recommended Posts

Anyone care to give a newbie some advice?

I found a mid-90s Sakurai No. 10 model classical for sale by owner for $800. It's cedar/rosewood and apparently has a couple of scratches near the bridge.

I'm upgrading from a plywood Yamaha and I'm a fairly experience classical player.

Anyone have any opinions on Sakurais or whether this sounds like a good deal?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard, Fightin'... is that a school mascot? "Good evening, and welcome to Class C college action as the Northern Delaware Tech Fightin' Engineers take on the Central Iowa Baptist Marauders"...

At any rate...sorry, can't answer your question, but welcome...I'm sure someone here can.

Yeah, welcome to the Guitar Forum, Fightin Engineer! (You "12-B", by any chance?)

Stick around, we need more classical players, here and world-wide!

Likewise, I have not run across the Sakurai name before, but there's probably a lot of classical guitar brands and minutae that I'm unaware of.

I do know that I love cedar topped acoustic guitars, both steel-string and classical! Something special about a good cedar top, different from the several types of spruce commonly used, that's hard to define in words...

Japanese, by any chance? I've liked the Alvarez-Yairi guitars that I've played (beat the snot out of my '84 'Yairi steel-string), and they're a hand-made Japanese make.

You hit the nail on the head Tedster. It's the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers to be exact.

As for the guitar, Masaki Sakurai is a Japanese luthier whose new instruments run in the $3K-$7K range, which makes me think that $800 is a good deal on this used one, but I thought I would try to get some opinions before pulling the trigger.

I don't have the Yamaha's model # handy, but I'll post it as soon as I can. It's actually a pretty remarkable sounding guitar for not being a solid top.

I don't know classical guitar, but I know research techniques!

Here's a link to the manufacturer website, if you don't have it already.

I leave it to your own expertise to analyze their materials and assess the value. Hope it works out for you. :thu:
