Prague
I've had a number of "amp only" players that can't tell the difference. POD's are as good as you want them to be.
James-Italy
I've got the PodXT Pro Ted. What do you wanna know? You have to try one out, but the presets don't really do the unit justice. With tweaking you can get a huge range of really good sounds. Get a 1rack EQ to go with it and you can do just about anything. I had the PodXT and traded it in on the PodXT Pro. For recording or live use you'd probably want the XT Pro. The main difference is the connectivity. I use it for the ease of recording and practising. To record is realy easy- just plug in the USB and off you go. When I'm fooling around and trying to write a song I can just dial in a setting and record a guitar part and not lose the train of thought fiddling around setting up amps. With the XT Pro there is also an option to record direct guitar, no PodXT amp sim or effects, while monitoring with a patch (don't remember if it's on PodXT). This would be great for going back later and changing amp/cab/effects and listen to the results during playback. This is probably one of the best features that I've yet to use. I always use the PodXT for my scratch tracks with the intention of re-recording later, which I rarely do... It used to my main practise rig because of the headphone out. But I've got some decent amps and now that I have the Palmer PGA04 I find I use the PodXT quite a bit less. The Palmer is a speaker sim/power soak (not an attenuator) that plugs speaker out on the amp and then into my mixer where I can monitor using headphones. I can crank up my VHT Pitbull to max and get all that tubiness without shattering neighbors windows. I mention the Palmer because if you are looking for something for late-night recording I'd reccommend you consider that option. I'm not a pedal user though and I'm not sure how the PodXT would sound/react with pedals. Something for you to consider if your pedals are a big part of the way you play. I seem to recall you always have 2 or 3 pedals in your setup. You'd have to get the floorboard and "re-learn" your pedal interaction along with learning the Pod. My quick rating (1-10, 10 being highest) Ease of use: 8 Ease of recording: 10 Sounds: 7 (it's got some stiff competition from the Champ/JTM45/Univalve/VHT Pitbull) My Gear My Attempts at Music
antimatter
I've been scoping out a POD(or something) too. Thanks for the XT pro summary James. DC
Hey Tedster, just wanted to say I dig your 'Rat Fink' avatar. Still have a collection of the little plastic ones. Why you thinkin' Pod? Werewolf by Night
FWIW, I kinda like my Johnson J-Station... if Musician's Fiend still has 'em for $99 (they were like $350 when they first came out), it's almost too good to pass up. It sounds even better for bass, too, so because of its "double-duty" ability, I'll never ditch mine. I was shopping for a POD, but a guitar shop that I had credit with got in the J-Stations, so I went with that instead. (I'd bet that for mixing 'n' layering tones, it'd be great to have both!) InstituteOfNoise
I've fooled many with the patches I've done on the POD 2 and now on the PODxt. There is a PODxt update coming soon, that will just blow you away. It will be free too. I heard some of the new amp models and cab voicings on the update at our recent Line 6 usergroup mtg. It will also have Post EQ. On top of that I run the PodXT into the new Atomic Amp for live use and it's just smokin! I designed many of the patches for GuitarPort 2.0 for Line 6 and I used them on the Atomic and it sounds as much like the real deal as one could get out of these products. Tedster
Thanks to all, 'specially James and Institute. DC...yeah, I'm basically a tooob guy...but, I'd still like something that I can record direct for rough demos with. Plus, there's a chance that at some point I might be traveling to work with someone out of town...which would require a flight. I'm not about to lug my TSL-122 on a plane, and I'm not sure what he has as he's a keyboard guy. Be nice to have something that I could toss in my suitcase. zeronyne
Another happy Pod XT user. The software for it is great (I'm talking about guitarport...not Line6 Edit). "For instance" is not proof.
DIAMOND DUST
Not a 'pod' user, but I have the GNX2, and it really kicks arse. The 24 bit converters are so sweet for going direct to the pc. I get some killer amp tones out of it. I mostly use it in front of my amps. The dist models and the Wha effects are great as well. It's going for 150$ less than the POD xt right now. It's sounds better thru an amp than the pod in my opinion. http://b-cordova.dmusic.com/

The effects are top-notch!Yeah, it's kinda honky in the low-mids and lows and all that, dialing in the EQ can be kinda trial-and-error, over and over again for a while till you get it more or less right. Oddly enough, on top of being bass-heavy, the top-end seems to have a more metalic "edge" to it (especially with any overdrive or distortion). The cab sims are kinda boxy sounding at times. And what works with one guitar and pickup might not with another, and vice-verse. It actually sounds pretty good with "soapbars"! But I like a fat, big-bottom tone. And I even use a pair of AKG headphones with an emphasized bass response! bassix
The PODxt sounds nice over the ol' hifi set but not nearly as good through my guitar amp. To be quite honest its amp emulations sound completely squashed when coming out my Fender Hotrod amp. I guess it's ease of use is the PODxt's real power (for quickly recording some ideas etc.). I quite like the PODxt though, I mainly use it for adding some effects (delays, phasers, chorii etc.) to my existing sound which comes bursting out the old Digitech RP14D. The PODxt's effects are way different from digitech's so now I combine the best of both on the fly, whenever I feel like it during a jam. A creativity thing I guess. I use the PODxt at the end of the fx chain so I programmed all my effects into the PODxt twice; both with and without "AIR" speaker/mic emulation so I can use the same sounds both at home and in live situations. Ease of use once more. I also programmed a "Bypass" channel (also with and without speaker emu). I never used any of the modeled amps in there yet because I can't seem to get to grips with them - the real amp simply sounds more real and nothing in the PODxt seems to beat the distortion sounds coming out of that Digitech RP14D (which utilizes a real tube btw). The PODxt is nice for home use but to be honest if I were to buy everything new I would probably go for a Digitech GNX4 or Boss GT6 board instead.
