Laney Heads?

I was wondering if anyone had experiences with Laney tube heads, specifically the GH50L. Here's why I'm asking; it's a little wordy, but hopefully this explains it best.

For a while, I've been saving up to buy a Marshall JCM 800 head. I love the sound, but I'd have to buy vintage (there's no way I can afford the reissue), and most likely over Ebay since the stores around here would hike up the price considerably. Not to mention that I'm actually looking for one with an effects loop.

The ones I've been lucky enough to play through have all sounded phenomenal, but they haven't worked that great. After all, they'd be peers if they were human (23).

Plus so many people still play through them, it's a turn off in fashion respects.

So I've also been looking at new(er) amps, and from the reviews at Harmony Central, the Laney GH50L looks appealing. One, I've always thought it'd be cool to have something that's between a Marshall and a Mesa. Two, bells and whistles are not a priority; I just need good overdrive and an effects loop.

However, there's no one here in DC that stocks them (or at least according to Laney's website). Is this a good amp? Two bands and their tones I dig (Sabbath, Local H) use Laney amps, but not that model.

My band plays, for lack of better words, straight hard rock. Imagine somewhere between Led Zeppelin and the Stooges, or between MC5 and Black Sabbath, or between Nirvana and AC/DC... you get the picture.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Well, I have played some of the Laney combo amps. The DC-30 was a real nice sounding AC-30 clone, one channel if I recall right, but it had good stuff. I have a friend who has the DC-50 (2X12 combo) right now, and he says it is a good sounding amp, that it has three distortion sounds on the dirty channel. He's a clean channel freak, and if it didn't sound good on that, he wouldn't own it. He says it's bloody heavy though, and he wants to go back to a 1X12 set up. Oh, and he says it sounds more "British" (midrangey) than he really likes.

As far as the bigger stuff (stacks) goes, I have never even seen one. I read that Tony Iommi swears by them, and he used to blow up a lot of amps, so they must be pretty heavy duty "gears" (sorry, Rockman60, just kiddin' :D ). I guess if you like Sabbath's guitar sound, you'd probably like them.

DOn't know if that helps you or not, but ther it is.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

I had a Laney half stack many many moons ago.

To be honest, I only purchased one so I could be a total dork and tape "de" in front of it.

(My name is Delaney...)

hey...stop sniggering...I had heard that Hendrix only started using marshalls becuase that was his name so...

Anyway, It was a pretty powerful rig, but I couldn't comment on the clean or overdrive channels as I was already on my way to 'rack-mount-heaven', but it's 100w and those 4 Celestions certainly moved a LOT of air!

How can we fight ignorance and apathy?

Who knows! Who cares!

Nah, you won't like the Laney heads - particularly the ones you find real cheap on Ebay. Nope, you won't like 'em at all.... :D

Seriously, those amps are somewhat one-dimensional. But if you like that sorta thing, this is exactly the sorta thing you'll like!

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

Nobody in the DC area has one? I thought the Chuck Levin store would at least have one or two... strange. I liked going into that store when I lived in the area.
