EmptinesOf Youth
In light of recent events at the local store and my friend gettin a new Epi SG G-400, i decided i wanted to get one. Ive been lookin around and i found a friend with one for about $200 give or take a little. It includes a case but there was a problem. If your familiar with the input jack on the SG its in front right by the knobs. I guess when the dude was playing he hit it with his arm and actually pulled it through the wood a little. Pretty much, just a little splinters of wood got pushed up and to fix it the local shop put a washer under the nut and tightened it so the wood got pushed back into place and it works fine now. Also, the frets 12-22 buzzed a little when played, im guessin it was cause the action was set right but the shop he brought it to before leveled the fret bars out or something. It plays great now, and it has grovers installed. What do you all think...go for it? thanks ryan
Dak Lander
Two bills? Yer not burned for that, even with the issues. As to the jack area being ginked up a bit. You can pull the nut & washer & force feed it a bit of good wood glue, clean up the excess, place a bit of waxed paper over the area and reinstall the nut and washer to pull it all back together. The next day, pull the nut and washer back off, remove the waxed paper, finish what clean up is needed & you should be good to go. Werewolf by Night
I'd say that's a perfectly good deal; and since the fret-leveling, etc., it's good to go, right? I wanna know, though, how it compares to that beautiful Ibanez SZ520QM axe that you bought? Is this mostly to figure out what to do with that gift certificate? Or do you really, really want it? EmptinesOf Youth
oh no, the gift certificate doesnt even come to play here, this is a from my friend. I suppose i could offer the gift certificate as part of payment but it has my name on it so i dont know. I dont think he likes goin there anyway. But yea this is all out of my pocket and about wanting the SG thing. Ive always thought they looked cool but heard bad things about them. I always think when im browsin the pages of the musicians friend that one day ill buy an Angus Young SG or SG Supreme i thought they looked so cool. And then i played my buds, and i fell even more in love with it. Its not at the top of my list, cause i could really use that Sovtek Head still but its up there. Thanks for the input. ryan
Werewolf by Night
I still want a heads-up comparisson between the Epi SG and your Ibanez SZ'! I just think that Ibanez looks sooo sweet, man! But how do they both sound and play compared to each other? EmptinesOf Youth
Honestly, the inbanez sounds a little better. A little heavier which gives it a pretty good chot at playin classic rock. The SG wasnt quite as heavy with the tones but it sure rocks. Heres the main thing tho: on my Ibanez i have pretty heavy strings .013 - .054 with two low E strings at the top (for A and E). I like this alot but i cant play as fast as i can on my old Ibanez, which curretly has .008 - .039's on it. So i think im gonna use the SG for faster stuff cause my old Ibanez sounds like a 5 dollar toy compared to my new one. but to answer your question, the Ibanez SZ beats the Epi SG in sound and craftsmanship. The neck on the SG is a bolt on, the Ibanez has a 3pc set in neck ( i think, looks similar to the back of an acoustic). Also the SG doesnt have any binding and i dislike where the input jack is, but i can live with it.
Dave da Dude
EOY, I still haven't been able to find the SZ520AM anywhere. You said it weighs more than the SG? Do you know how much it weighs? Is your SG mahogany or alder and maple? Dave the GASeous Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
Blue Strat
Personally, I wouldn't pay $200 for a bolt neck SG. I'd get the set neck version. A G-400 should cost somewhere in the $350 range new, and about $200 or so used. The bolt neck versions of the SG cost about $200 when new. Never pay full price for a used guitar. BlueStrat a.k.a.
