jgourd
I bought a MOTU 828 to use with my Sony Notebook. Big mistake. The Sony PCG-Z505-HS just can't do it. Sound goes in and out, but it breaks up in the middle. So, I have 3 days until the gig, which Notebook actually works well with the MOTU 828 Firewire interface? jomag2000yahoo.com
Try a PCMCIA firewire card- $100. Maybe the built in one can't cope Or try disabling the built in sound (ESS,Crystal,Yamaha) via device manager (Start-Settings-Control Panel-System- Device manager-Sound, Video, and Game controller) Try to remove as much junk in Start-Run-type msconfig-Startup, MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE CHECKED!!!- Scan Registry System tray Load Power profiles (All) This will get rid of any crap that might otherwise interfere with your MOTU 828 Good Luck

offramp
You could try a Mac laptop. You'd have it done by now. I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
jgourd
I may try a Mac Laptop. I am heading over to the Apple Store with my road rack of Mic Preamps & the 828 tonight. Rumour has it that they will set up a full test for me so I know in advance if it will work. I used to be Mac guy so this is not a real problem except that I'll have to install Dave on it so I can use NetBIOS networking to transfer the files to the PC DAW for mixing. Either that or connect my Firewire drive and pray there is an init that can mount FAT32 file systems. One of the objectives of this mobile rig is to burn CDs of the show, at the show. With the PC notebook, I could hook up 3 Firewire 24X burners and use Nero to write to all three at the same time. Can Toast or something else do that? As far as disabling stuff in the Sony is concerned, I have been there and done that, nothing worked. I have not tried the PC Card Firewire adapter because the Sony uses the infamous Ricoh CardBus chip which is known to not work with Digital Audio Interfaces according to RME's research. An alternative to all of this is to drag my whole rack mounted DAW, display, keyboard, etc. to the show (yuck).
Dylan
The problem your describing is probably due to an incompatible Firewire chipset. The MOTU website discusses this here . I'm looking at buying this laptop soon, which has a compatible Texas Instruments chipset among other killer features like a CDR-W/DVD combo drive, a 1GHZ PIII, and 256 MB of RAM. I'm no fan of Compaq desktops, but this laptop seems like the best deal out there right now! -Dylan This message has been edited by Dylan Walters on 10-17-2001 at 01:52 PM
SFOracle
Jgourd, No sense in buying a new laptop, keep your Sony and put a compliant IEEE-1394 Cardbus PCCard in it. Here are some PC Card IEEE-1394 interfaces that use the TI chipset. I believe the chip in question is the TI TSB43AA22 chip. Quatech QFP-100 http://www.quatech.com/shopquatech/products/prod4329.asp SIIG Cardbus 1394 PCCard. http://www.siig.com/knowledge/10010986.HTM http://www.siig.com/ I was unable to verify if the Keyspan PCCard IEEE-1394 adaptor uses the TI or NEC chipset. DO NOT get any of the following - I have confirmed they use the NEC chipset. Orange Micro Cardbus Firewire Adaptor. Ratoc CBFW1U Cardbus Firewire Adaptor for Win. Adaptec FireConnect PCCard. As far as PC notebooks with integrated IEEE-1394 support, I know Dell has this on the Latitude C800 series laptops, but I was unable to determine what chip set they are using. I didn't check any futher. BTW - one way to tell if they use the TI chipset if they don't advertize this is to download the driver files and look in the .inf, files for a vendor code of "104C". The Driver should also say "Texas Instruments Compatible IEEE-1394b OHCI ver 1.0" or something like that. Don. Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. jgourd
I'll look into that. If it is not a fix I can always return it. I got a salesman friend at Guitar Center to call MOTU today and I talked to one of their people at length. No matter how many times I asked him what their reference system PC notebooks was, he wouldn't say. He also wouldn't say which one he would buy if he had to go out and get one right away. I then changed tactics and asked, "Will one of these $1200 iBooks work well"? The answer was a resounding yes, if I add more RAM.
jgourd
I tried the suggestion of using a Firewire Cardbus Card. Although sub-optimal, this did work. The issue I am having is that the VST ASIO driver records just fine, but will not play back. I resorted to the old style MME driver and it works, but with about 2 seconds of latency which I do not care about since I am doing a live recording.
