New Pot For My Old Wah

Hi Gang,

I have a Cry Baby made by the Thomas Organ Co. of Sepuleda, California. It needs a new pot as the old one is making enough gritsch to be seriously distracting. Does any one know where I can buy a new one, and any info about how to change it out? 'Tanks!

Tim

If you care about re-sale, I'd forget the DC connector for the power supply and just stick with the pot replacement (keep the old one in a zip-lock bag somewhere). The old Thomas Organ wah-wahs are collector items with a high re-sale value now.

There are several makers of replacement pots for wah-wahs. Teese, Jim Dunlop's Hot-Potz, Fulltone, and a few others make them. Check with Steve Daniels at http://www.smallbearelec.com for the different types and costs. He should also have the DC power jack should you decide to drill a hole in the case and install the external power jack.

Hope this helps!

What, not into seeds? :D There's got to be room for at least two ounces in the empty parts of the wah pedal, right?

Bluestrat, thanks for the site and dealers. I bet some of those will have what I'm looking for. And, yes, I hear you about not modding collector value pedals. I figure to just dangle two wires out through the crack between the bottom plate and the case, and adapt the adapter to battery-terminal type connectors. No permanant damage that can't be returned to un-modded original condition.

I believe you can find a replacement pot from Dunlop.

With respect to respondent cautions on installing an AC jack/converter, here's a way you can do it without making a permanent alteration to you collectable.

Get a length of braided double wire a foot or so long and soder one wire to the Positive terminal and the other to the negative terminal of the converter jack (note from your AC converter and its male plug which connection is positive as many of these jacks are Pin negative and sleeve positive - look at the little diagram on the box of the plug). At the other end of the wire, install two small alligator clips (I suggest the insulated type with the rubber sleeve and install a black one to the negative wire and a red one to the positive).

Next take the bottom plate off you wah and clip the red alligator clip on the terminal that the red or positive wire of the battery connection clip attachs to, and the black alligatior clip on the black or negative wire to the battery connnection clip terminal. I would reinforce these to stay in place with wraps of electrical tape around the jaws and terminal. Then run the wire to the outside of the unit and replace the bottom plate. It won't be pretty but it will be functional and it beats batteries.

Make sure that you get "Conditioned" AC converter designed for musical application, like the Boss and Rowlands models, otherwise you will get a wicked hum with a wah (avoid the standard electronic store AC converters).

I don't think you can get the Teese pots anymore. Analogman used to stock them, but GT pulled the supplies because of some scam that was being pulled. I know the Fulltone pots have as good a reputation as you could hope for and last longer than most others.

Or, if you want to really bring your Wah back to life, why not send it to Geoffrey Teese at "Real McCoy Wahs" and have him install a pot and restore your pedal to it's former glory? He is the man for Wah work.

Tea.
