JCCJ
I am curious if anyone has any feedback on modifying their Strat with the EMG DG20 Pro-series. This is supposed to be directly from EMG and be the 'real deal'. Did it give you the Floyd Sound (ie, not counting David's FX setup)? Were you happy with your purchase? Any regrets on changing your Strat? Any feedback is very welcome. Thanks in Advance! Werewolf by Night
Well, the vast bulk of "the Floyd Sound" was recorded well before EMG existed; most of the EMG/Gilmour deal has been in later year live peformances; I'm not sure what he used in recording the last few post-Waters albums, though; maybe the EMG set-up, maybe not, probably a little bit of this and that. Now, I have had personal experience with a simlar pickup and onboard electronics get-up, that is, EMG 85/SA/SA H/S/S pickups with both the EXP Expander and the SPC "Strat Presence Control". If the idea of sounding like you've got a preamp and compressor-limiter with a not exactly "vintage" thing happening sounds like a good one to you, then you may really like them. They stand up incredibly well through all manner of processing and effects, have unreal sustain, and are quite quiet. Do a search for "EMG pickups" here on the Guitar Forum, there's been a lot posted on them (some by me). StinkMonkey
Me too. I have a MIM Canadian Dealer Limited Edition Fat Strat. I changed out the stock electronics for the 85/SA/SA setup. I absolutely love the tone. Definately a hot Humbucker with out being overpowering. The singles just sing with out being tinny or harsh. Tinny and harsh as in my Texas Specials. Over all install was pretty simple, even though I had to Dremel the Humbucker hole on the pickguard at the corners because the 85 was just a tad more square than the stock pickup and the corners wouldn't quite fit. I also had to slightly deepen the jackslot in the body as the EMG jack was a just hair longer than stock. I didn't route a battery hole with a cover in the back, I just change batteries every 6mos or so during a string change. Play really loud and everything will be allright. Randy Combs
I have the EMG DG-20 assembly in my Strat. In fact I gigged with it last night.Yeah with the right effects you nail Dave's tone.Of the later Floyd years.I love the DG-20.Alot of tonal range. But one thing it doesn't do.....that clean Strat tone. But it's a trade off.I have a Strat that's stock for those tones, which were the basis of Dave's tone before "The Wall" years. You won't be sorry if you do install the EMG DG-20.
