did you ever do one thing for so long that when you quit doing it and did something else it didn't feel real at all?

Yeah, but pretty soon, the new job will start feeling like the "real" thing that you've been doing forever, and the old thing won't seem real to you anymore.

May all your thoughts be random!

I was a machinist for 5 years before going to school for electronics engineering, and I know about the metal filings in the fingers thing, believe me! This is one of the cleanest shops I've ever been in. It's a big electronics connector factory, so everything is kept clean and tidy. Plus, there's not a lot of big chips when you're working with a surface grinder, it's all dust.

Yeah, same thing. I worked in a sheet metal shop at 18 and its probably a good thing I didn't fly on commercial airlines back then. :D

Not that they had planes when I was 18. :(

I had a teaching gig at a psych hospital based alternative school that just ended last of May, after 3 years ( $17 hour), so now I'm in the process of finding a new teaching position for the fall. Its a drag changing jobs after getting used to one for a couple of years. We'll just have to squeeze by for now on my wife's income ( she's an RN and makes decent but we've got a lotta bills :( ). Anyway, good luck to you guys in the new jobs, hang in there!

Yeah, I'm feeling kinda the same thing. I was an institutional stockbroker from 1986 till February of this year, that's 18 years doing the same thing...

Now I'm semi-retired and have all this time to do whatever I want, but I'm busier than ever. Really strange to wake up each day and have no obligations. No alarms anymore, no more 5:15! YooHoo! But, it's a really strange feeling and doesn't seem real.

Bluestrat, Congrats!!!! :thu:

CONGRATS! But, maybe you should join the Air Force?!

Kidd'n... ;)

Although I don't get paid by the hour, I make an equivalent of $25.00 an hour based on a 40 hour work week. BUT, since I am overseas here in England, I'm making $28.00 an hour since I get A huge housing allowance and cost-of-living allowance. My housing & cost-of-living are TAX free. So is my food allowance. Also, keep in mind that my medical/dental is free. So, I don't have to spend at least 14% of my salary on health insurance, then pay deductibles on top of that. Also, Uncle Sam pays for 100% of my college tuition up to about $4,500 a year. I just pay for my books. :thu:

One more thing to keep in mind... I don't get paid overtime. My pay is the same no matter how many hours I work. At times, I have worked 23 hour days in the "war zone". So, I guess all-in-all, it balances itself out taking into consideration my added benefits. I can retire in 5 more years- for a total of 20, with a 50% pension. Each year I stay in the military past 20 years, 2 1/2% is added to my pension. One can stay in the military as long as 30 years, if they make the rank to stay in that long because you can only stay in for so long with each rank. If you don't make your next rank by the time you are due to make it, you get booted out. Anyways, 30 years= 75% pension. At this point in time, I don't know how long I will stay in. I'm thinking around 24 maybe. BUT, I don't want to re-enter the civilian work force as an "old man" either. I would not be very marketable.

My promotion results will be out on 24 June. I feel that I have that "in the bag". With that, I will be able to stay in for a total of 24 years. That would be a 60% pension. Remember, 2 1/2% on top of 50% for each year served past 20 years up to 30.

BUT , our annual raises still fall short with the increase of inflation, and can't keep up with it. So, write your congressman and tell them to give us REAL raises since we have our butts on the line day in and day out for the peace and security of THE WORLD.

I only shared all this personal info. to give you all a little scoop of military "pay" life.

Peace :)
