an introduction

the one ups

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm a seventeen year old guitarist. Played for maybe three years now. I've played almost exclusively acoustic on a Takamine EG-something or the other with too high action and 12s (its a labor of love playing her, but hey.)

Anyway, my English teacher was kind enough to give me his PRS Santana SE, as he has no real use for it. I went out today and bought a Vox Pathfinder and promptly opened new doors for my playing. Um. Yeah. That's about it.

What I meant to say was hello.

Dang. I wish I had your English teacher when I was in high school.

Ah well, c'est la vie...

Actually, a Takamine should be a pretty nice playing acoustic. Take it somewhere and get it set up, put a set of .011s on it, you'll have yourself a nice acoustic in addition to your electric. You've gotta have both :D .

Other than that, c'mon in, pull up a stool by the fire here...Dak and I were just gettin' our acoustics tuned up for a jam on some John Prine tunes...have a fresh pot of French Roast on...make yourself comfy, and pick along!

and yes, my english teacher is just about the coolest teacher ive ever had.

Yeah, welcome to the Guitar forum, "the one ups"!

Sounds like things are going well for you there, and that you've got a good grip on being well-rounded in your playing. Playing both flat-top and electric guitars is a sure way to strengthen your hands, technique, and musicality on both instruments!

Like Tedster says, pull up a stool and make yourself at home! What kinda music do you like to listen to? Whaddya like to play?

Welcome to these excellent forums the one ups !

Which Pathfinder model do you have? What do you think of it? I've been looking a bit on the 15R myself, but I haven't tried one out.

Hope you'll get as much out of this forum as I have, you'll learn tons of stuff and get many good laughs!

WELCOME

You show great poise and restraint in your introduction of yourself and I'm sure you'll find yourself very welcome here.

Hope to see 'ya 'round the ole' pot belly for quite some time now.

So, we know your gear (btw, I agree 'bout the high action and tree trunk strings; they definitely strengthen your fret hand); what's do 'ya all play? What artists do 'ya like?

Dave

Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I'm majorly into the Beatles (if you wanna be decent, you must study the greats). My teacher also turned me onto Jeff Beck, Ween, Coltrane, and Jeff Buckley, all of whom I love. I also dig Paul Simon and Simon and Garfunkel, though I'm told many guitarists can't stand him?

I can't stand most new music. Drop-D riffs will be the thing that kills rock.

Oh, right. It's a Pathfinder 15R, the model with reverb. Forgot to say how it sounds. It's clean is just plain awesome, its distortion works for me, nice and warm, though not very crunchy.

"Many" guitarists can't stand Paul Simon? Huh! I think he's a great rhythm guitarist, not to mention a great songwriter!

Beatles, Jeff Beck, Ween, Coltrane... some of my favorites! (I still think that Joghn Coltrane is one of the greatest lead guitarists of all-time... ;) ) I must admit that I'm not familiar with Jeff Buckley; so many albums, so little time...

I would bet that you'd really like The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips; great album!

Likewise Kind Of Blue, by Miles Davis; and The Fillmore Concerts (a remastering and repackaging of the classic Live at the Fillmore East), by the Allman Brothers.

(spam spam spam NO, not really!) Clonk on my signature line, and tell me what you think; then, if you want to hear some REAL musicians, check out the "Music"-thread (started by SJones) here on this forum. Some great stuff there, all kinds of styles!

:cool:Edit: Hah! I see that you're one step ahead of me, onto the "Music"-thread already ready already! Hah!

For an exercise in chords, go figure out "Still Crazy After All These Years". The guitar players that can't stand Paul Simon are probably mostly headbangers. Not that there's anything wrong with that. There's something good about every generation of music...and plenty of crap, too... :D

Caevan! Your music was very classy, very cool. I dug it uite a bit. Great guitar tone, what were you using?

My teacher actually still plays but since he has a Gibby Les Paul, a Carvin somethingortheother, some sort of Martin, in addition to a Mesa Boogie Double "Rectum frier", he never really plays the PRS.

'one ups- I listened to "Darling" so far; it grows on ya! Yeah, it could probably benefit from some mixing and tweaking here and there, but it's cool!

Like A string said, very '70s-in-a-good-way, a little Elvis C/Beatles/Former (post) Beatles in vibe...

Upon listening to the reverby guitar solo, as well as the way some of the buzzy low guitar notes almost sound like sax-lines, and the slightly wonky (again, in-a-good-way) riddum guits: Am I correct to think that you've been known to spin The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Scary Monsters from time to time?

Anyways, it sounds like you had fun doing it!

Why, thanks! (I've really got to get more stuff down 'n' finished 'n' hosted 'n' posted 'n' all...) Nice of you to say so, 'one'.

Here's the bird's-eye low-down on that caper:

*Gibson Les Paul "Gem" w/ P-90 "soapbars", tuned, strung, and set-up for Open-D (D-A-D-F#-A-D, low-to-high); used for both the "clean" arpeggiated sparkly stuff, and the overdriven "lead" lines (I also play fingerstyle 100% of the time, no picks; my nails are seriously important to me!)

*Johnson J-Station, using a bf Fender model sans speaker/cab-sim ("clean"), '70s Marshall head & 4x12 cab-sim model (overdriven "lead"), both with onboard effects of J-Station

*direct to hd via n-Track Studio recording software; no mixing, other than reversing "Left" and "Right" of J-Station

My rig is usually-

Guitar: '96 Gibson Les Paul Classic "Premium Plus", all stock, standard-tuned; '97 Gibson Les Paul Studio "Gem" with P-90 "soapbars", w/ three (soon to go back to one) Epiphone EZ-Bender string-pull benders, set-up for and tuned to Open-D

Cable: Blue woven-jacket Quantum, 18' or so

Amps: '67 "blackface" Fender Pro Reverb 2x12; '90s Carvin Vintage 33 1x12; sometimes feeding an early, "Mark I" GT Electronics Speaker Emulator

~or~

Modeling Preamp: Johnson J-Station; monitored via AKG K-55 'phones, sometimes via a cheap 4-channel Rolls 'phone-amp

Effects Processor: Lexicon Vortex

I liked the sea sounds in the beginning so I thought that maybe I should make it seem like I was playing at a beachside dive bar. The crowd noises went wacky because I didn't pay attention to them, but it was mostly just a fun jab at meself, since I cannot possibly play live (I have but two hands).

Cool.

I was expecting a genu-wine "Live", you solo alone singin' 'n' playin' guitar; you can understand my momentary confusion! Sorry!

(I also thought that the wrong track had been uploaded or something.)

Welcome, the one ups!

Gotta love your attitude and the specific variety of influences you've mentioned.

I'm a big Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel fan. Anyone who says Paul Simon is anything but a wonderful guitar player either hasn't heard him play or doesn't know a guitar from a hole in the wall. He's a fantastic fingerpicker and a wonderful rhythm guitar player. Leads are simple, but appropriate.

So let's finish the John Prine, Ted, and kick off some Blackbird, The Boxer, Two Of Us, America, Kathy's Song, Rocky Raccoon and any other Beatles and S&G songs we can dig up. ;) (My 5 year old's current favorite song is April, Come She Will. Paul Simon at his best!

Then you jazz guys can have him. ;) (K-i-d-d-i-n-g. Though I still haven't listened to Jeff Buckley. {Dodging items thrown by Lee Flier and others.}) :D

Again, welcome to the forum.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman
