bought a new floyd rose bridge

Hello. i am replacing my bridge on my MARLIN Sidewinder guitar, this has some sort of trem bridge fitted. the metal block that holds the bridge to the springs broke, so i have bought a new Floyd Rose trem unit. i have not fitted yet and it looks fairly simple to do so, what i want to know is how to put strings on it. i once read that you had to cut the ball off the end of the string and clamp in to bridge using clamps? any information would be gratefully received, please help!!!!!

Hey, welcome to "therussian"! Welcome to the Guitar Forum!

This all depends on what version of the Floyd Rose unit you have there; most require you to snip-off the ball-end of each string (being sure to clear all of the twist that loops back around the string there), while some do not (most notably, the newer "Speed Loader" model).

Here's a link to an official Floyd Rose stringing and set-up page . There are several models described here, note the differences; follow the instructions for the version that most closely resembles yours.

You could do a search for "Floyd Rose" on this forum, the "search" toggle is in the upper-right corner, under "Post a Poll". There are a lot of previous Floyd Rose-related threads; you will doubtless get 300 in any such search-results.

Here's a link to one such thread on troubleshooting Floyd Rose problems , and over here's yet another Floyd Rose troubles thread . Lots of info and discussion. I'm sure that there's loads more threads on similar things kickin' around in the server's database.

Best of luck, and keep us posted, 'Russian!

At first, yeah. But I've been doing it for nearly 20 years. I've got it down to a science. The worst thing about stringing up a Floyd Rose is the counter-tension you get from all the strings. You get one string in tune and the others go flat - to differing degrees. But you get used to that, too. One of these days I'll have a guitar with a standard bridge.

You can take off a lot of the tuning fluxuations by just bending and streching the hell out of the strings when you first put them on. I don't use the trem bar hardly at all, but even when I do, my half-assed Floyd-licensed trem stays in nearly perfect tune. Much better than my other hardtail guitar. I think sometimes it just depends on the guitar.
Shut up and play.

Yeah, you cut off the ball ends and clamp the string in the bridge. No big deal. I think EVH used to string by putting the ball end in the tuner, clamping the other end, pulling out the ball end to a suitable tension and winding the post.

Check out this recent tuning discussion or search on "tuning" for all matters tuning oriented. We're all geeks about it. ;)

For my Floyd, when I re-string, I make sure the fine tuners at the bridge are all reasonably centered so I have leeway either direction tune up or down. Tune up and stretch out the strings good and plenty BEFORE clamping the nut.
