madgrinder
I have always found my desired tone with the right pickups and the right amp, but I am ready to try new things. What should my first effects purchases be? I tried a POD and a Behringer V-amp, and heard the most dismal digitized sounds. I want single analog pedals, simple and reliable. ...it's Mr Stabby, da da da da da daaaah, da da da da da da daaaah...
Blue Strat
I'd suggest a fuzz, something like a Big Muff Pi or a Fuzz Face. You're not going to get a similar tone out of your JCM 900. Think more along the lines of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and the White Stripes instead of Hendrix. (Not that there's anything wrong with Hendrix) Or, a time based effect like chorus, flanger, tremolo, delay, vibrato, etc. BlueStrat a.k.a. Tedster
Get thyself over to the nearest music store where you can play with the toys...and plug a bunch in. See what trips yer breaker... A lot of it depends on music style preference. I'm more of a blues/classic rock guy, so I don't need any "Dungeon of Doom Distortion" type pedals, a nice overdrive is great for my purposes. What I have on my board is an Ibanez SoundTank Tube Screamer, a Danelectro Chorus, and an old Boss Tremolo (for that vintage sound). I am of the opinion that effects are best used sparingly. A compressor and a wah would be nice...but, I don't really need 'em all that much. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
BlueZet
my advice, if you HAVE to use effects, BORROW!!! try to borrow some stuff from friends/guitar players and use it for a couple of rehearsals - what sounds AWESOME the first time you plug in, may not be all that awesome after a couple of rehearsals, and if you're not in a cover band where you HAVE to mimic a particular sound you might decide, you'd better save the money (or use it to buy another effect, that DOES work for you) believe me, if I'd gone this way, I'd be a richer man (or own a couple more guitars ) - due to recent cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been SWITCHED OFF
batterypowered
Well, I was typing a longer response, then the browser crashed and now I'm pissed, so here's the short version. Essentials: Overdrive Fuzz/Distortion Wah Delay and though it's not an effect, per se, invest in a good volume pedal. One belongs on every musician's pedalboard. twoblock.net batterypowered.org
the one ups
In my humble opinion, I thought the Yamaha Magicstomp was really something. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/3/aaronjunmusic.htm "Tell the truth and make it rhyme." - John Lennon
