Billster
One quote says it all: "...that's how you make money," said a music director from a top rock radio station WHO ASKED NOT TO BE NAMED (emphasis added) Making art and making money very rarely occur at the same time. That's why we treasure things like Hendrix, early Van Halen, and other special music that became so successful. If bands what to change their sound to gain more commercial success, that's their right, but "honest version/radio version" is the stupidest thing ever. Frank Zappa had unexpected success with "Valley Girl" and could have kept hacking out little carbon copies of that concept to make a lot of money. He took it for what it was, great success for something that represents a small fraction of his musical concept, and kept right on doing his thing, like the London Symphony album and Jazz From Hell. I am also aware of "Wal-Mart" versions of albums, mostly by dance type artists, that have cleaned up lyrics dubbed in to qualify for shelf space at "family values" Wal-Mart. Never, ever, ever, ever, buy albums at Wal-Mart, or Target, or Best Buy or any other megalomaniac corporation store. End of speech. We now return to your regularly scheduled programming. coyote
Zappa also had his run-ins with record companies, with radio stations, with the PMRC, with the law.... being an artist with integrity ain't easy. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Funk Jazz
i have no illusions about "making it" in the music business, but what is bumming me out lately is how this mentality is trickling down into bars, clubs & restaurants. it's getting harder and harder just to be local yocal making a part-time living. people are acosted with so much crappy music that their basic ability to distinguish good from bad has vanished altogether. Werewolf by Night
Once again, I'll quote that ol' Frank Zappa chestnut, "People don't know what they like, they like what they know." It's not very encouraging when you get just how apathetic and absurd most folks are when it comes to music, art, literature, film... I can't believe how often I'll hear someone judging female singers on their looks and dancing! And actually buy all of the soap-operatic hype bull$h!t... I'm gonna sound like some elitist snob here, but... I often feel that the rampant popular success of "Pro Wrestling" is solid evidence of the American public's being unfit to have a direct popular vote (sans the electoral college). Trot it out with a little sound 'n' fury, some tinkling o' brass and cymbals; let that idiot tell that tale!(Kid and Brittanny, I'm on to ya.) They'll eat it up, stab you (the conscientous artsist) in the back, and ask for more at twice the price. As long as it's conveniently located and properly packaged! Shannon
Man, its all gonna end up being one type of vocal, with one kind of groove, from one genre... that's it ... and the mindless millions of consumers will buy it cause it's marketed ...and the rest of us will be street corner performers I don't know if I'll ever "make it big" but I vow here and now to play my music my way, to never be swayed by the promises of fame and fortune and to always be varried and creative... Even if I'm a broke a$$ street performer Amen

skipclone 1
The singer from The Goo Goo Dolls had a memorable quote after the success of that acoustic song `Name`-they`re basically a rock band: "Fix one toilet and people think you`re a plumber." Tea.We always thought there should be a music appreciation course devoted to Zappa given there was something for everyone whether they recognized it or not. Todd Rundgren was another guy who seemed to look at the money and say... that's not what makes me tick. Wilde & I share birthdates, different years thankfully. He was out there.. Bohemian?, the interplay of a cultural mosaic reivial. It's interesting to see a world relive the energy and ignorance as though it was 1904 again. oh boy... need a drink after that thought I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
