Blue Strat
What are your favorite guitar related budget items? I'm a big fan of cheap effects pedals like Rocktek. I've got three pedals from the Rocktek line-up. Vibrato, chorus, and flanger, and I'm bidding on distortion at the moment. I likes 'em!! I haven't paid over $20 for any one Rocktek pedal, and I like them as good as any other flanger or chorus pedal I've tried. (the tremolo/vibrato isn't as good as amp tremolo, or even some of the pedals I've heard, but it's decent) What's your cheap thrill? BlueStrat a.k.a. madgrinder
Small amps. I have them scattered through the house, and have two in the garage. That way...I always have an "alone spot" to play without having to lug the Tramp around. Most of them are 20 watts or less, and have 8" speakers. Since I usually practice, write, and learn with a clean tone, the lack of effects and small size actually makes them very comfortable. I am unable to play with headphones on...maybe I have some Stevie Wonder head bobbing or something, but headphones cramp my style. Baby amp list: Samick L10AV w/Jensen 8 speaker, Kustom tube 12, Kustom Lead 10, Pignose Hog x 2. I paid less than $40 each. ...it's Mr Stabby, da da da da da daaaah, da da da da da da daaaah... Werewolf by Night
I really like my blue-glazed ceramic Dunlop "Moonshine" slide, and my machined bell-brass, concave and flared Dunlop "Harris" slide. If I could get one shaped like the latter, but made of the same ceramic material and glaze as the former, I'd have the PERFECT slide! The Moonshine is left unglazed inside, and that's extremely comfy! The concave, flared profile of the Harris is great for fretting behind the slide, and slanting the slide for minor-6ths on the 2nd- and 4th-strings, etc. I do also like pyrex slides, too; and the Dunlop ones with the thick walls have a great tone and feel. And, no, I'm not a Dunlop stockholder! Archer Brand Teflon-gel from Radio Shack is miraculous for keeping guitars in tune! A little tiny droplette in each nut-slot and bridge-saddle notch does wonders, among other string-path contact-points and moving parts. (Hmmmnn, is "Teflon" another Dupont trademark? Wait- no, that's Dupont, isn't it? Wheewh! A good capo is always cool to have on hand. I think that an Epiphone "EZ-Bender" string-bender is a very cool, cheap thrill. And my AKG K-55 headphones have delivered countless hours of greatly enjoyed "silent" playing! They have an inherent bass-emphasis, that sounds great for guitar or bass and keeps me from cranking the bass-knob and muddying up recordings. And, though not quite "cheap", a Johnson J-Station delivers a Hell of a lot of bang-for-the-buck (especially through those AKG 'phones); last I knew, they could be had for $99, brand-new. Major Tom
You aren't the guy who just bought the Roktek Vibrator pedal that I sold on ebay a couple weeks ago are you? Cheap stuff I like: Dan'o Fish n Chips 7 band EQ $29.95 at MF- great little swiss army knife - buffering, solo boost, eq tweaking, preset volume reducer, level matching, amp input level tweaker. Maximum bang for the buck. "sleeper" guitars that can be had on ebay for cheap! - stuff like used Samicks and certain other Korean made instruments with less than popular brand names, that with a little tweaking can be excellent sounding and playing pro-level guit-planks. I have a couple that are awesome bang for the buck - an older Samick LP copy (solid close-grained mahog body and neck, pretty flame maple top, open book 'stock and all) that cost me about $230 shipped. A Peavey Reactor - american made tele copy that sounds like...well a tele. In like new condition, cost about $170 shipped.
