We're making some changes to our sound system and instrument setup at chuch.

1) add subs (Yes!)

2) reduce stage volume by removing floor monitors

3) add In Ear Monitors (Yes!)

4) replace acoustic drums with electronic (Yes)

5) remove the bass and guitar amps (oh, No!!!)

For the bass, we're getting an Avalon direct box. I need your help with the guitar. Depending on the song, I need clean, distortion, chorus, delay, etc.

If I use a floor multi-effects processor like this, do I still need a direct box?

What brands and models of multi-effects processors do you like in the $500 range? (floor models only)

Thanks for your input!

I would have to say try a Line 6 POD. If you aren't going to have an amp, the amp modelers should really help you get a good sound. There are lots of effects and plenty of different sounds. I don't know the current price but I am almost sure they are still under $500. Probably closer to $300 and who knows what you can find on E-bay. Get the optional foot pedal and you can access the sounds quickly.

Definitely get a POD plus the Line6 floor board (either the short or long board). This will allow you to change effects, change amp models and control volume without touching the POD unit itself.

If you go with a straight effects unit (IE. onewithout an amp modeler) you will sound like Jeff Cook from the band Alabama in 1985 (NOT a good thing IMHO).

Thanks. Our sound consultant also mentioned the Line 6 Pod. With the floor controller its still in the $500 range.

Would I still need a direct box, or can I run directly into the sound system from the Pod?

(Yosemite Sam voice:) Whoa!! I said whoa, mule! WHOOOOAAAAAAA!!!!! (banggggg) When I say "whoa!", I mean "WHOA"!

Why are you buying anything?

Are you unhappy with your Digitech multieffect pedal?

The XLR output of the Digitech is a speaker load compensated, balanced output. You neither need a new processor nor a DI. The Digitech does both.

Typically, an XLR output is balanced and a proper impedance match for a mixer input. The whole reason to use a DI is to get the high impedance output of most instruments and effects pedals conformed to the low impedance input (preferably balanced) of your mixer. Sure, there are plenty of specialty DI's that claim to make your signal path sound more like a mic'd cabinet, but the DI itself is an impedance matching device only.

Since your effects pedal has a built in DI, no outboard unit is necessary. Forget about the POD unless you want the sound a POD produces. For one thing, you WILL need a DI with a POD, unless you purchase the more expensive POD Pro rack unit.

Guys, I know everyone has their opinions on gear, but why suggest moving to another product when he already possesses a high quality effects box that is designed to plug in direct from anywhere on stage, sans DI?

In either case (POD or the specific effectboard you linked to) you don't need a DI-box. You'll need a DI-box if there's not a balanced output on the device.

I'd recommend a FX-box with amp- and speakersimulations. If the POD is too expensive, you can always go with a Behringer V-amp. I've got a V-amp Pro and it's great! I don't have the floorcontroller though, so I can't tell you how well that works.

You said "floor models only", but I'm not sure why that would be a determining factor. If you are open to a rack-mount unit then I'd also give a nod for the PodXT Pro. It does everything you'd want with no need for a DI unit. It's small, fairly easy to use, and has all the outs you'd need. Stereo balanced outs, Stereo unbalanced outs, Digital (S/PDIF or AES), and USB if you are gonna connect to a home PC. It's really easy to get a decent sound quickly.

I find myself using it less and less these days, but I've got some other pretty decent gear laying around. I also don't play live so I don't need quick changes in my sound. The more I use "real" amps the less I like "modeling", but you can't deny the ease of use.

Another "floor model" that I had that was pretty good was the Digitech GNX3. I found it quite a bit harder to program and it has no USB, but the sounds are good. The balanced output is only mono, but the unbalanced is stereo. It's got all the effects and models you'd probably want. You can run it straight to the mixer with no DI needed.

Good luck whatever you choose.

Thanks, James. I was mainly considering floor models because sometimes I have to cover for rhythm, lead and acoustic during the service. I need to make quick changes on the fly. -but i think the rack mount POD has a floor controller available.

I'll check out the 2 you mentioned. Maybe GC will put them on sale on Memorial Day.

Has anyone here shopped at Guitar Center during their "list" sale on Memorial Day?
