Compact Diss
I know there are a lot of posts about these. I have gone through them. I am thinking of the Zoom, now I forgot the model number-it sells for $199, Dr. Taz has one. I was also looking at the GT-5 or 6. I want to play rock, jazz, weird spacey stuff-Vernon Reid got me going on this kick--Is the Zoom the best one? It's the Zoom GFX5 Disclaimer I am not into pedals, do not want them--like them but enjoy digital more
Base
I bought one of those a few weeks ago, very impressed with it. I had a Zoom 505ii and a Boss ME-30 previously, but both had very plasticky sounding distortions, this one is a lot more powerful and very easy to use. Am actually programming in my own patches now, used to just use individual effects on the Boss. I'd have a good play with it first though, see if you like the sounds. A lot of the pre-set ones are actually pretty good and most of my own patches are just tweaked versions, but they'll give you a good idea of the range of sounds you have open to you.... doc taz
If you took a look, and played through my Zoom GFX-5, most of my presets sound nothing like what the unit uses for presets. I run mine through the power amp section of a late 1980's SS Fender Deluxe 85, and headphones for late night playing. I actually bought it for the amp sounds. The effects are good, and the sampler function is a nice bonus, but I haven't used that very much. I'd think that running any multiFX as a preamp would be a good way to judge its sound. When I got mine, I did a few dry patches first. One clean Fender Twin, a couple Marshall sounds, and a couple of Mesa patches, plus one fuzz patch. All of them sounded great. I only used the DRIVE and EQUALIZER functions when I tested. Pummeled the Deluxe 85's power amp with 'em. Oh, and the neat thing about the ZOOM's amp sims is that they're done using analog circuits, not digital. Only the effects are done digitally. I feel this contributes to the dynamic sound of the amp sims. With some of the distorted patches I have, I can clean up quite well, using my guitar's volume knob, especially on the Marshall ones. Some of the clean sounds do seem to crackle slightly with strong pickups, but that can easily be adjusted. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page

Base
Let us know how you get on!!! I've been looking out for any web pages with patch listings on them. I'm not as imaginative as Taz when it comes to designing my own and I find that kinda thing useful, if only for starting points to developing my own. Haven't found any yet but I'll post them here if I do, be good if anyone knows of any could do the same. I miss my cyber twin with all of the patches and the seemingly endless possibilities of tone--I'll be happy to have something to toy with for different tones. doc taz
What I'd really love is to have one or two of those new 4x12's by Hartke, and a good power amp that runs about 300 watts total @ 8 ohms (150 a side for stereo). Heh, if only I had the room for that! I'd be complete for a while. Well, that, and I'd love a Schecter Blackjack 7 string to complement my Ibanez. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
Blue Strat
http://www.snowlock-photography.co.uk/images/V.jpg Is that your guitar Base? I was wondering about those when Epiphone came out with that series. It looks cool, in a 80's sort of way. BlueStrat a.k.a. Base
Yeah, it's one of them. I managed to get it cheaply on eBay at the end of last year (less than half the stickered price) with the intention of selling it on after having a go, but I liked it too much It's pretty cheesy, but it's fun to play (and weighs next to nothing). That is the pic the dealer put on eBay, thought I'd pinch it for a change of avatar I also have a Warlock I bought for the same reason, it's quite fun turning up to rehearsals with that thing when we've decided to work on a ballad I will be selling that one on soon though...
