mach1mike
My son is nine years old and wants to learn guitar. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but i don't want total crap either. Here is a link to the guitar im looking at on ebay. Its a memphis 3/4 electric guitar. Or should i get him the mini squire instead? Thanks mike http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3725368240&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT God Favors no Group, Only Religions Do That
Tedster
Wait to see how much the bidding goes up to. I think the mini Squiers are about 100 bucks. Memphis is a somewhat popular "off (cheapo)" brand...not great, but not bad for the money, either...and at his level of expertise it would probably work fine. A couple of things to consider: 1)...If he's 11, I'd check and make sure...he might be able to play a full size guitar. You can get him a smaller one, but in a year or two he'll outgrow it. Depends on where he is in his growth stage now...and at 11 they're all different. 2)...The good thing, it has an adjustable neck and bridge, so if the action really sucks, it can be fixed. On the other hand, you can't really look on eBay and make sure the neck isn't beyond hope. If the neck was really bad, it would make the strings too high, and difficult to play. I always recommend, when buying a first guitar for a youngster, that people take someone guitar-knowledgable with them (not the kid's bud who's been playing 6 months) and have the kid themselves try the thing out to make sure it's comfy. Oops, my bad, I see you post on the forums quite a bit...but if you're a keyboard dude you still might want to take a geetar picker with ya... Oh...you'll also want to get a little practice amp, preferably one with a headphone jack in the back, and a pair of headphones. You might also check your local store. Squier and Epiphone both make "starter packs"...a beginning guitar, strap, cable, and amp...usually for a very reasonable price. mach1mike
Thanks for the input Tedster. He is small for his age and has a hard time with my guitar. he is nine years old not eleven. I do play guitar but i'm a begginer, so i have a lot to learn still. God Favors no Group, Only Religions Do That
BillWelcome Home Studios
I'd probably be looking in a guitar store, not on ebay. I'd look for a 3/4 sized guitar. If Fender makes one in a Squire, I'd buy it. In the old days everyone made a 3/4 guitar, and the Fender Mustang, DuoSonic, Gibson Les Paul Jr, Melody Maker, and quite a few other models were common... but not cheap. the Squire offers quite a value. mach1mike
I know i should go to a guitar store, but the closest one is 85 miles away. I may just get the mini squire from musicians friend. I have heard that they are good for kids. God Favors no Group, Only Religions Do That
Werewolf by Night
The great thing about getting a brand-new mini Squier (or any brand-new gear) is the warranty. If you do go to the trouble of getting to a store- and call/e-mail around to see what different places have in stock ahead of time, and mention that you're "shopping around" (you just might wind up with a better deal, letting the pressure be on the sales-person)- you will also benefit from real-live, right-in-front-of-you customer service and support, as well. If the store is worth its salt, they'll be great for that, and warranty recognition, too. Buying used via the 'net can be a real crap-shoot, almost best left for very savvy guit-shoppers and folks who can deal with an occasional "fixer-upper"... ! TulsaBand
I would definately check out all the stores in your area. I do believe Fender makes a 3/4 size. Good luck. Check out www.tulsaband.com for great prices on gear.
TeleCarlos
Well, if he can get past the "girly" graphics and shapes, I bet you'll find a playable, smaller scale guitars here: http://www.daisyrock.com/ I'll get one for my daughter sometime in the future (she's a very mature 8 eight year old), one of the heart or flower shaped ones. And you can bet I'll borrow it for some gigs! Heard or read some nice reviews on them. I think they specialize on "easier to play" guitars for women /girls /smaller hands. Give it go...
