whitefang
And y'all call yourself GUITARISTS!! Let some self-taught talentless shredder die, and there'd be two pages of overblown tribute. But nothing on one of jazzdom's finest stylists? He died last Thursday. RIP, Barney. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! musicalhair
Dude, after over 2000 posts, wouldn't have a little more faith in this community? Wouldn't you suspect that maybe you just missed it? Wouldn't you do a search? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=19;t=007924 If you say it is not much, that is disrespecting Mr. Kessel more than those who posted did. I'm sure I've mentioned my love for Barney Kessel in a post or two in the past, when he was alive. Those that didn't know who he was, well that is their problem. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. WhitefangHey whitey, I know that. Unfortunately, his story didn't receive the attention in the press some of us may have wanted. That gives you little right to dis the rest of us, though. I'm sure there are other deserving guitarists out there that I've yet to hear. You gonna get mad if we forget somebody deserving next time? Please don't. I'm sorry if I'm patronizing you, but I hope I'm making a point. I sure as heck ain't getting mad that most folks don't like or know of the person I'm currently using in my avatar. Instead of the hatin', why don't you try to say why you liked Barney Kessel in the first place? That would be a much better way to pay tribute. It may even turn on folks to his music. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
BiC
I'm always learning of these greats after they die. Let's start giving them props while they are alive. Like my pastor says, "Dead noses cannot smell the roses" (in reference to sending flowers to people's funerals... send them flowers WHILE THEY ARE ALIVE!) Send an underated guitarist a "dozen" now... so who will it be? Please share... God Bless! BriBaby
Hmmmm. I read Diamond Dust's and Henry's and JIm's and everyone's excellent post a week ago. Nothing else I could add other than R.I.P. to a true great. I will probably never be in his league, as many here will not. Can I still call myself a guitarist now? Once I thought I saw you, in a crowded, hazy, bar........

fantasticsound
I didn't even hear Barney Kessel had passed away... Perhaps next time you should title a similar thread, "Did anyone hear _____ _____ died?" It's no secret that pop icons, regardless of talent, will get plenty of press on their death while virtuosos of niche celebrity are often lost in the background of what passes for news these days. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
coyote
I saw the original post about Kessel's death. I had nothing additional to contribute, so why bother? There's nothing worse than a thread that amounts to a long list of "me, too". I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Gruupi
I am sad that he died but was never a fan of his music or his snobbish attitude. musicalhair
I've not told anyone this but I'm clairvoyant, like John Edwards before his show was cancelled, and Mr. Kessel's ghost said he didn't like your snobbish attitude either, nor was he a fan of your music. You probably are a fan of a lot of his playing as he had so much session work in LA that his playing could be anywhere. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. whitefang
As I don't get here as often as I used to, I apologize for missing the first post. Also for sounding abrasive when it truly wasn't my intent. I guess I should mention suprise that the first post faded so quickly. Some threads hang around forever, so it seems. Some are gone in hours! Go figure... Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
skipclone 1
He passed at a time when I`m too busy to post on much of ANYTHING-my life is becoming a constant search for places to catch up on sleep. Although it`s not my main interest style wise, he has left a lot of great music, as well as a signature guitar. We can only hope for so much.
