DIAMOND DUST
I just bought 'The best of Dark Horse'. There's a song on it called 'Here comes the moon' that is Brilliant. Kind of a play on words from 'Here comes the sun'. Anyway, has anyone heard this tune? Do you dig it? It has such a great 'sitting on a beach playing an acoustic' vibe. One line from it goes "Looks like a little brother to the sun. Man it sucks he's gone. This disc also has songs from CLOUD 9, another must have if you love George. http://b-cordova.dmusic.com/
Werewolf by Night
I sheepishly admit that i have not, in fact, heard that song nor that "best-of", nor much of his solo/post-beatles stuff. George was my favorite beatle, though! He must have been the coolest kid in school! I saw a picture of him when he was quite young, sitting on something like a customized Mercury or something near a horse-track; I can't remember if he had a guitar in the picture or not. But he just looked so classic-cool! I love a lot of his guitar parts on Beatles tracks, especially on "Hey, Bulldog". Tedster
Haven't heard that. I'll have to seek it out. I have a few of Harrison's solo recordings. I think he was probably my favorite Beatle as well. I guess I'd go as far as to say he's a direct influence. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
jbote
"Here Comes the Moon" is a pretty cool song, and I think "Best of Dark Horse" is the best way to sample what George was up to once he left Capitol/Apple and went to Warners. All of his output for Dark Horse/Warners ("33 1/3", "George Harrison", "Somewhere in England", "Gone Troppo" and "Cloud Nine") was remastered under his direction shortly before his passing and is now available. (I have the lp versions sitting in my bookshelf.) With the exception of "Cloud Nine", though, I'm not sure I would be in a rush to pick up the others...while there are some great songs ("Blow Away" on "George Harrison" and "This Song" on "33 1/3") sprinkled throughout, and his guitar playing never wavers, this was not his most fruitful and creative period as a songwriter, IMO. He sounds, alot of the time, like someone who is tired to death of being in the music business. (And, considering the energy expended just being part of The Beatles...well, who can blame him?) All of that seemed to change with "Cloud Nine" and his work with The Wilburys, then finally "Brainwashed", his parting shot and maybe his most consistent work since "All Things Must Pass." It is very sad he's gone...the other day I was watching the "Free as a Bird" video on the Anthology DVD. I hadn't seen it for a long time, and any time George and John popped up on screen it choked me right up...they are truly missed. John
fantasticsound
Great album... I'm more partial to Crackerbox Palace, Blow Away, When We Was Fab, and All Those Years Ago. To be honest, I didn't really listen to Here Comes The Moon. I like the instrumental figure, but overall it's not as interesting to me as others on the album. Thanks for reminding me. I just went back and listened to it for the first time in a quite a while. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. A String
I haven't heard the song yet but I will certainly try to find it. George was a fantastic guitar player! I'd have to agree with Jbote on the orginal stuff. I own "Cloud Nine" as well as the Wilburys stuff. The rest was really good, just didn't float my boat. Either way, he will be missed. Billster
Slightly OT - The Beatles (in order of magnitude) George - the best Beatle hands down. Cool, smart, best post-fab four, etc. and on Ringo - a sense of humor and humility Paul - too treacly. third best only because I hate John. John - too whiny. To me, Lennon/McCartney were a great songwriting team because their worst qualities (sappy McCartney vs. abrasive Lennon) cancelled each other out and left the good stuff to float to the top. It's near perfect as the roller coaster swings your mind to and fro and leaves you there with this subtle smile creeping on.. oh ya. We played George during the wedding and danced our first one that night to Your Love is Forever, something I learned the summer before we married. Unlike the other Beatles, his passing's left a hole in my heart. I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
