What's this tone?

I don't have an electric guitar (yet).. still saving up. Recently I came across this guitar tone in one of the guitar player magazine lessons....

http://www.guitarplayer.com/mp3/Blues%20Guru.mp3

It sounds kinda sweet to me.. just like to ask what kind of guitar it is and what effects(if any) are being in use.

Thanks!

Sounds to me like the neck pickup on, hmmm...possibly a 335 or a semi-hollow body (but not necessarily). No distortion, just a very nice jazzy clean tone.

I like that last lick he does there.

Oh, BTW...it sounds like he's using the absolute best effect...just a guitar plugged into a cable, and plugged into an amp. A little reverb on the amp, and that's it.

Yes! I like the basic sound there... dang i was hoping it wasn't a hollow-body as they're pretty expensive.

Can the exit 22 get this sound, Guitarzan? :D

They haven't come in yet at my local dealer so i've yet to try.

So, MadStrum, what kind of guitar (and amp, for that matter) is it that you so madly wish to strum? What are the candidates to save up for?

Like brer Tedster says, the neck pickup will likely get you there. Try leaving the tone control on the guitar wide open, but experiment with slightly rolling the volume-control down, say, in the 8 to 9&3/4 range. This sometimes has a pleasing effect on the mids and low-mids when going for a clean, soulful, woody tone, and subtly reduces treble as well.

Also experiment with your picking attack and "touch"; putting a little "English" on it can go a long ways. Usually a light, almost brushing stroke will work well for this kind of thing. Using a pick, try the side, that is, the flat-surface of the pic, instead of the edge, pulling it up sliding against the string. Sounds weird to describe it in words, sounds like bluesiness and wood and metal in practice!

i would say you could get real close with the neck single coil and a roll back on the tone. the single coils in the exit 22 are warmer than a strat. also an added benefit is the "gibson" 24.75 inch scale. you can get a good variety of tones just by string guage, pick type, touch and setup. ther are alot of varibles to play with when it comes to getting certain tones. i can nail malcom youngs (ac/dc) tone with my godin lg sp90. and his guitar is totally different than mine. he also uses a wound g string. if you had a set of 11's (guage of strings) and set the action up higher, plus lowered the pickups and rolled the tone back i would say you could get a sound you like.

the best thing to do is go to the store and compare the exit22 to a hollow bodied axe and try and compare the tone, and see how close you can get.

this is a tough call, let your ears be the judge.

godins are fairly resonant and a set neck guitar that is hollow will have a generally mellower tone.

By the way- just in case this isn't obvious to you- pick near the end of the fretboard, you'll get in the ballpark that way.
