musicalhair
I saw a film excerpt of Ravi Shankar (you know, Nora Jones father, that guy) where he was playing his sitar and he played the ending riff to Baba O'Reilly by the Who. Now I'm not saying that he was covering the Who, I more think Pete heard it and through it in as a sort of statement. My question is: does anyone know what song that is or what record it might be on? The Ravi Shankar song or recording that is, I already own Who's Next. This might be the first topic I've ever started, if not first then second. Maybe our new spamming buddies can learn a thing or two. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. I I mjrn
Maybe Townshend saw the same film as you...BTW, what was that film? Maybe that's where we can start looking for the recording. Another possibility is that there is no recording with that lick (so much Indian music being improvised) or that the entire thing was an accident---that is, the lick was just serendipitous. NMcGuitar
I don't know about Ravi & that riff, but (assuming I am remembering correctly) the "Baba" of "Baba O'Reilly" is Pete Townshend's old guru, Meher Mahesh Baba. There certainly could be some connection. May all your thoughts be random! - Neil www.McFaddenArts.com www.MikesGarageRocks.com
musicalhair
Hey Micheal's nose, I dont' recall the film. It might have been a Bio on Coltrane or on jazz in the sixties, but I'm not sure. It might have been one of those improvised moments, those are usually the best. Hey NMcGuitars, I think you're right about "Baba" being Pete's ex-guru. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. Thomas Wilburn
The opening to Baba O'Reilly is Meher Mahesh Baba's life statistics fed into a synthesizer and tweaked by Townshend. It's probably just a coincidence that Shankar played it. Four String Riot the myspaces, we hates it

I'd never heard that before. That's really bizarre. Can you elaborate?
