PRS, Jackson, or Ibanez?

Hey guys,

Some of you know from my other post I'm looking for a new guitar around $500-600 USD. I love metal and hard rock music, so something that sounds good for that, but I also play clean stuff, so it can't be a thrash only guitar. I think I've narrowed it down to a PRS Tremonti SE, Jackson DK2, DKMGT, and DKMG, or an Ibanez RG370DX, what would you guys recommend?

How about a used guitar??

For $500-600 you can get a good used US-made Carvin or humbucker-equipped Fender. An 80s Kramer also might fit the bill.

You could also get a Japanese Ibanez 550, 470, 750, etc. These are very well-made and pretty versatile too.

The guitars you listed are probably fine but they're all made in Korea, India or Taiwan. So they'll be pretty inconsistent from model to model and will have a lower resale value. Expect to try a few of each before you find one that works really well and sounds good.

I'm not a fan of EMG pickups, but I'm definitely a fan of Jackson for metal and hard rock. Forget the PRS, IMHO. It's too much for a Korean copy of a guitar that wasn't exceptional in the first place. My friend's (revorhythm) brother has one and loves it, so I don't know. But I'm an anti-PRS guy anyway. Ibanez is good too, but I never liked they're clean tone much. I love my Jackson though, although I took out the Duncan Desgined pickups, and it made a world of difference. I haven't tried the DXMG though, so I couldn't tell you much more.
Shut up and play.

So you have a Jackson DK2? What did you replace the Duncans with, and did you replace all of them?

Thanks for the info though.

I'd go for the Jackson DKMGT. I believe those are made in Japan. Surprisingly great clean tones, and awesome distorted ones. I reviewed the Floyd Rose version (11/23/2003) , but I'm willing to bet the hardtail version performs just as well.

I've tried the other guitars you mentioned, and most seem to play well. I'd think the newer Ibanezes would benefit slightly, as they use better locking trems on some of the mid range models. I still like the Edge bridges best, though.

I don't like the EMG Hz pickups. They seemed to be too muddy when used with heavy distortion. They might sound great clean, but I don't remember trying them clean. I do like Duncan pickups, mainly the Invader and the single-coil sized humbuckers like the Scorcher, Hot Rails, and JB jr.

I play a Strat with a JB jr in the bridge. You could get one of the Mexican made Strats and get a JB jr or Hot Rails in the bridge for your heavy, overdriven sounds and use the neck pickup or neck & middle pickups for a classic Strat clean sound. A very versatile setup. You should also look at a Fender Fat Strat. You can get a great Fender for under $600. :)

Just my $0.02

BlueStrat

I have a DX-10D, which is basically like a DK-2, but with 2 humbuckers. An SD JB in the bridge, an Alnico II in the neck. Gives a huge versatility of tones, but still works best for metal.
