Guitar Player magazine's new layout

I love the new design! At first, I thought I was reading a new issue of one of those PC gaming mags, or Wired magazine, but wow. I'm impressed. They've cleaned up the place, though you have to be careful not to confuse the ads as being part of any article. The cover with Zakk Wylde is a nice touch. :)

As always, the lessons are quite good. The air piece by Morse is something I'm obsessing over, as is the pentatonic shred lesson by Rusty Cooley (holding a brand new Novak 7 string).

And so often that content is missing, even in GP. So much of the guitar rag selling business revolves around the selling of heavy metal equipment, ad naseum.

Sorry to say, none of the big guitar ragazines are designed for someone like myself.

Have you recorded an MP3 today?

I beg to differ. I think you could integrate a lot of what GP offers into your jazz playing. I mainly play metal and rock, but also work classical, blues, and jazz ideas into my own playing. Besides how do you think jazz itself expanded? It's spawned other genres of music, too, including fusion (the dreaded "F" word in jazz, or so I've been told), and bossa nova, to name a few.

Better yet, why not check out this page and give them your ideas? I'm sure the GP staff read the forums, but would probably do a bit more if they're contacted directly.

that's because they are designed to sell advertising. it's the thorn on the rose, so to speak. a singular jazz market mag just plain wouldn't sell.

GP manages to give voice to every style of music, and does it with class, without giving way to the "more tab is better" mentality.

i'd still rather read GP than downbeat or jazztimes.

Really? Sometimes DB and JT have some really good articles, with someone like Russell Malone.

I'm not big on the Tab scene (not big on Diet Coke either :}). The big rock rags advertize as having lots of tabs of "everyone's favorite" metal guys?

I guess that would sell.

Too bad interviews with masters like Kurt Rosewinkel don't seem to sell. :(

DB and JT are both good magazines. I have my Jazz times issues with Mike Stern, Jane Monheit, and a few others. I generally read Downbeat fom my local library, which has been subscribing since I moved to Jersey from Virginia.

Well, it took me a little while to adjust to the last few "big change" cycles, and this looks like one of the "biggest"...

I haven't yet thoroughly poured over the entire issue, but it does look like they're off to a good start, as it seems to have more of everything (seems being the operative word, till I really digest it). Visually, it's a little disorienting at times, but I think I'll get used to it in time.

I think that they need Dan Erlewine back! I love that guy, and his columns and articles in the past were unique in the media and excellent in every way!

As far as the general state of the publication, it may not focus on jazz, but they certainly had about 98% more jazz related content than other "guitar" rags. They hipped me to Django and Wes! I always thought that the magazine was fairly realistically well-rounded. I mean, they do want some news stand sales, right? Sometimes I think the attention and focus paid to an "artist" is a bit overblown, but, I say tomato- you say to-motto, right? Plus, I'd be a hypocrite if I begrudged them of some new act that I didn't see as anything to write home about, while thinking that Hound Dog Taylor's riffing is just as valid as Yngwie, right?

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?

Not to be a grammar Nazi - well maybe :D , but do you mean add as in ad as in advertisement?
Yes, ad as in advertisment not add as in addition. My bad. :)

I also noticed that Zakk stores his pedals the same way I do... in a milk crate. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got MY copy of the March GP today.

Whoa. I can't recall a more significant change in the mag's style...

I'm really impressed by the new look and feel. Even the ads seem to better produced. It's also THICK, 224 pages! With lots of interesting articles and lessons from some great players.

I still haven't taken mine out of the plastic it's shipped in. I've been kinda busy, and I still haven't finished the February edition (John Mayer on the cover).

Soon, soon......

May all your thoughts be random!
