Squ
Yeah, every once in a while I hear some 50s rock pumpin away at some store, and I really want to get some but I know no one's name. So I need you guys to recommend me some good 50's rockers/albums. The only one I can even think of Jerry Lee Lewis, and with him I have no idea where to start. Mark Zeger
Jerry Lee Lewis? Isn't this the Guitar board? A couple of '50s guitar legends: - Link Wray. "Rumble" is the track that spawned thousands of guitar players. - Duane Eddy, the King of Twang.

antimatter
Chuck Berry - The Great 28 CD is well, just great. And to get to know Chuck, watch the movie Hail, Hail Rock n Roll. Chuck Berry is Rock n Roll.
Mudcat
I know I am re-stating some that were previously posted, but these are the 50's artists you've gotta have if you are a guitarist: Elvis (w/Scotty Moore on guitar) Gene Vincent (w/Cliff Gallup on guitar) Ricky Nelson (w/James Burton on guitar) Eddie Cochran Buddy Holly Chuck Berry Carl Perkins Link Wray Mudcat's music on Soundclick "Work hard. Virtual Jim
I second Eddie Cochran. Chuck Berry is obviously the man, but Eddie really needs some hard earned credit.
SoundWrangler
I 3rd/4th Eddie Cochran - find a CD compilation called Somethin' Else, it'll knock yer argyle socks off. Buddy Holly, too - no doubt. For as famous as those songs are, check out how peculiar their arrangement ideas were!
Blue Strat
How about retro 50's? Brian Setzer kicks butt! Everyone else already listed my favs ---> Chuck Berry Bill Haley Ricky Nelson Buddy Holly Elvis w/ Scotty Moore Duane Eddy Eddie Cochran Howlin' Wolf (hey, he did most of his hits in the 50's!) Dave da Dude
I thought everyone had missed Buddy Holly until I re-read bluestrat's list. A true legend, but everyone seems to forget him. I do. The only reason I remembered him so readily was my son had loaded my "greatest hits" CD of him in my CD player the other day. I think it's a re-mastered compilation. I can't really recommend it, 'cause its EVERYTHING he ever did (well almost), and gets a little repetitious after a while. How 'bout Bill Haley and the Comets, "Rock Around The Clock"? I think that's the name of an album too. Any collection of Jerry Lee Lewis (required 50's listenin' even if he didn't play guitar) HAS to include "Great Balls of Fire". Another MUST is Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly". Also "Kansas City" by Wilbur Wright. You might be able to find a decent compilation with all of these. Oh yeah, Fats Domino, "Blueberry Hill" for a real thrill And, yeah, The Ventures are '60's, but you should have some. I'm too partial to a coupla of 'em to make an impartial recommendation, but try "Walk Don't Run". "Tequila", The Champs? "Pipeline", by ???? (brain dead ) And if you're going into the early/mid '60's, you have to have some Surf Music; Beach Boys (all, but I'm too jaded to be a big fan anymore) and Jan And Dean, "409", Lil' Ole' Lady from Pasadena" I'll add more as the brain cells de-fog Dave the '50's Dude Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

Beatnik
I know this is from 1993, but: "Crazy Legs" This is an album that you put on if you want to have fun, and also enjoy the greatest guitarist alive at the same time. Crazy Legs is a wonderful assortment of old rockabilly tunes that Jeff and the Big Town Playboys remake almost perfectly. Danny Gatton once said that this album was the only rockabilly album that he trusted to be authentic Samples in Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000292A/qid=1073994281/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/002-5516530-8161631 "Creo en la Reflexión, no en Dogmas" Beatnik
