But i really like the stuff he's done with DEEP PURPLE. "PURPENDICULAR" is a really smokin cd; Ted the mechanic, Rosa's Cantina. I also have an Eric Johnson album called "Tones", that steve is on. antimatter Posted October 30, 2003 Share Posted October 30, 2003 I saw Steve Morse do an acoustic show once; little theatre, all guitar players, he just talked and played, classical, jazz, country shuffle stuff, amazing. I've seen him with the Dregs and his solo band(s) many times. Whoever he plays with, he raises the bar. I know at one of the G3 tours he joined them for a song or two. I'd love to see that! And anyone ever hear him play with Skynyrd doing Gimme Back My bullets? Too cool. Still haven't seen any of those Deep Purple DVDs yet. Anyone recommend them? Most people don't know that about a year ago Steve became the guitarist in Deep Purple who had the "longest" tenure... passing Ritchie Blackmore. To see Steve TEAR UP on the classic Deep Purple materials is very impressive... it's a great match for him because it's both a release for his melodic and speedy chops, but also full of strong, crowd pleasing hooks and rhythms. The new DP material he's been a part of has his stamp all over it... (which is a good thing), and of those releases, I also dig Perpendicular as well... Steve sound is amazing... as always. It's hard to believe he can switch so easily betwen Dregs reunions, Deep Purple material, and his own solo band... It's not like ANY of that is trivial to learn or play... but he's always been on top of his game in all the times I've seen him play. Considering what a "guitar monster" he is, he's amazingly friendly and humble. To think that he's had times where he was ready to get out of the music biz and be a full time commercial pilot... it's a sad commentary on the current state of music. From what I understand DP has been doing very well in their concerts and only fair in US cd sales. In Europe however, they seem to have a more receptive cd-buying audience. They just announced a new cd and world tour... so keep your eyes out for a show in your area. If you're a Steve Morse fan, you want to see the Deep Purple show. guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! I talked to T Lavitz once where he said it was disheartening. Steve was always ready and the whole time they played and rehearsed he maybe heard Steve blow one note. Maybe. He lived up this way for a while. Never met him but some friends of mine did. They said he was the nicest guy you could imagine. Said he did kinda of want to stop playing music or at least stop having to play so fast all the time. It takes work to maintain those level of chops. But his fans demanded it. I think Steve has some relatives here in Colorado Springs and shows up around town occasionally. He did a clinic in a small club near my home. I've seen them twice with him (yes, the '98 tour w/ ELP & Dream Theatre was phenomenal!), and I have a DVD of him with them and I do recommend it. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. You are entitled to your opinion, though. I don't see anything wrong with Jack White. He isn't my type, though I'll admit he's good in a raw sort of way, and I'll leave it at that. As for Mr. Morse? No question, he's one of my all time faves. The only album I know well besides the Dregs material is `Southern Steel`, excellent work. Haven`t heard him at all with DP, hopefully they`ll come here. The 3 times I've seen them, it has always been the Dregs. The last time was a year and a half ago in Dallas. Did I mention I love him, he's phenomenal, and all that? Another speed guitarist got sick of it all too and DID quit to go solo and do whatever he wanted. That was Rik Emmett, who used to be lead guitarist of Triumph. Now instead of speed guitar, he plays intimate shows doing jazz, classical, and pop/rock songs. Those who didn't like his switch could just avoid his shows if they wanted. And yet his show last weekend in Dallas was sold out. Steve Morse could do the same thing if he wanted, and I'm telling you, he'd still sell out small venue shows. Rolling Stone ommitted Chet Atkins, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhart and others from there list, while including (among others, Joan Jett. Joan Jett wasn't even the best guitarist in the Runaways! I was glad to see Hendrix and Allman up at the top. Maybe not the two greatest of all time, but you could make a credible argument for either. I am a huge Kansas fan (mostly Kerry Livgren, who was out of the band in '88), but Steve Morse stole the show that night. His work with the Dregs reigns supreme in my book though. I remember listening to Morse when I was little with the Dregs. I love his use of triplets and the rhythms he uses in his phrasings. He's a guy who plays fast but makes every note count. The Lone Chicken Posted November 2, 2003 Share Posted November 2, 2003 I got into the music of the Dixie Dregs and the amazing guitar work of Steve Morse during my years in s.CA (1978-1981). I got all the Dregs LPs, as well as a solo LP that Steve put out shortly after the Dregs broke up, and I also was able to hear a tape of a concert that the Dregs put on in San Francisco around 1980. I've not had much of a chance to hear any of Steve's post-Dregs work, although I do recall that he played with the group KANSAS for a while, but Steve in DEEP PURPLE?--I find that hard to imagine. It seems that there isn't much in recent times in the way of instrumental fusion-rock, and in my mind the music that Steve did with the Dixie Dregs stands among the all-time best of that genre. Sure, some people might like Blackmore better (I do on some level), but Steve is not only a talented player, but very caring as a person. He likes his fans and his family at home. At least, I hope playing all the Renaissance music has tempered Blackmore. Oddly enough, and only my opinion of course, but Rik Emmett never really learned how to play guitar well until he started learning from Steve Morse. He (Rik) is actually quite decent now. I enjoyed some of his solo acoustic stuff (Live at Berkley???). On a personal level I've never liked Rik though. I remember reading one of his article one time and he said something to the effect of Stevie Ray Vaughn playing very simple stuff. That really pissed me off. I figured if Rik had the tone, energy and passion of SRV, maybe he'd be as popular. I figure for every 100 people who knows and admires SRV maybe one knows who Emmet is. Simple, my ass! When you see Morse playing with them, it's obvious he (and they) are having a great time. And musically, it is a great match on a number of levels. I'm a Blackmore fan, yet I was glad to see him leave Purple and even happier to see Morse step in. It rejuvenated a great band. I used to think I was Libertarian. He's really happy with the Deep Purple situation, and he's planning on staying with them for the forseeable future. I personally think he brings a lot to their band, and he's been able to "fit" his chops and technique into the Deep Purple sound without sounding like a Blackmore clone. If there ever is a guitarist in Deep Purple that follows him, I think it will be hard shoes to fill. Obviously Deep Purple isn't making the kind of music that is topping the charts, but Steve is finally making enough money that he's enjoying the fruits of his skill and talent. I'm glad for him for sure! Ironically, he often has time for both Steve Morse Band and Dregs reunion mini-tours, and he's great in both those settings. He was a little "out of water" in Kansas... more of a "hired gun" than a true band mate like in DP, but he's found a "home" now. To hear him rip on the classic DP songs live sends chills up my neck, and if they come anywhere near you on tour this coming year... and you like DP music, go see them... it's a very fun show. guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! To be honest, they are not the best Kansas albums, but that's due to the direction a record company pushed them back then. Steve's contribution was brilliant as always. I am back.
