Mike Gug's new fuzz

Blue Strat

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Thought you might like to check out the Fuzz Face I built for Mike. I've got a sound sample up, along with a sample of my own Fuzz Face and a Big Muff Pi for comparison:

Let me know what you think!

Guggy knows I love him, it's a guitar thang. Or an immature-humor thang, maybe.

Hey, blue', can you post some samples of all three, but playing some single-note bits in various registers, and- especially- doing some "oblique" bends, where you bend the "B" whaile holding down the "E"? Therein lies much grunge, clunge, fuzz, and the like, to compare fuzzes and overdrives and distortions by.

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?

Sure, no problem. It'll be later tonight though, I've got to be in class soon.

Glad you like it! I don't know if my Strat is a "Pro Tone". It's a Korean Squier strat from about '93. It's just the coolest blue colored strat I've ever seen, kind of a neon blue colored body. Maple neck & fretboard, Graphtech String Saver saddles, Grover mini's, a Fender Custom Shop blue moto pickguard, and the JB jr. in the bridge position. I'm going to go with a SD little '59 in the neck and middle positions when I get a little more money (like another $140! )

That was my rendition of the opening riff of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" by the White Stripes. :D I'll either do the lead for "American Woman" or "Purple Haze" for the solo parts so everyone can hear the single note lead tone.

I would've expected days or weeks, let alone "later tonight".

Once again, blue d'MAN!

I'm thinking of buying enough parts to solder up about 10 PCBs for my own Fuzz Face circuit (the silicon Fuzz on my music page) and see if I can't sell 'em at a profit over the internet. :) I'll have to see what I can get parts for and work up an estimate, but I'm sure I'd sell all 10 of 'em because of the desire for "Boutique" stuff now days.

I'm thinking of putting together kits and possibly a few completely finished pedals to sell. Should be cool! I might have to steal your "Electronic Apocalypse" phrase about the Big Muff Pi for marketing purposes! :D Enclosures and switches are the expensive part. :(

"This one goes out to all you Dead-Heads in Northern Cali!!"

I got the other three samples up, but thanks to the bandwidth limitations of geocities, my site is down temporarily. :( It should be back up within the hour, and you can hear my fuzzy rendition of "Casey Jones" (at least a very small part of it).

If you want feedback, crank that sucker up and stand closer to the amp! ;)

Hey, I'm downloading those right now... oh, there the are; there's one playing now...

Nice spittiness, fuzz and grit, but a bit smoother than some, too. Direct into your soundcard? Sounds surprisingly good, in that case!

It really cleans up nicely with the guitar's volume down, don't it?

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?

Yeah! :D I was beginning to wonder if anyone was paying attention.

Oh yes. I really like my silicon fuzz for that reason. Mike's Fuzz Face is cool, but not quite as spitty as mine. His is a lot smoother though. I bread boarded an NPN Fuzz Face last night while watching U-571 and it's about as smooth as Mike's, while having more spittle when cranked! :thu: I really like it. The second transistor in the circuit is out of an old walkie-talkie me and my brother had when we were kids. :D I've still got one more, but I haven't identified them yet. :( The first transistor is a 2N2222 NPN used for high-speed switching (as in older digital circuits).

I went to Home Depot today and got a couple of 4" PVC drain pipe caps and metal covers for a 4" round electrical box. These should make great enclosures for my fuzzes! :)

Cool! Hey, blue', didja ever see the "Quadrafuzz" project that Craig Anderton published in Guitar Player years ago? It had controls governing distortion and levels for lows, lo-mids, hi-mids, and highs. It seems like something you'd be all into!

They had examples of it in action on a "soundpage" way back in the Bronze Age, but I don't know what I did with mine; you'll have to settle for a telegraph.

That QuadraFuzz sounds cool, but it also sounds rather complicated. I don't etch my own boards, and putting all of that together on breadboard or a Radio Shack PCB would be a frickin' nightmare! I'd rather be dipped in molten hot magma by an un-necessarily slow dipping mechanism. Evil voice>

A Fuzz Face or a Distortion + is about as complex a circuit as I'm willing to tackle at this time. :)

I've got some pictures up now! Same page as before,

http://geocities.com/teleman28056/music_page.html

For a fuzz that sounds like a cross between my PNP silicon fuzz and Mike's PNP germanium fuzz, would you guys pay $40 for one? I'm doing a little research into marketing a pedal like the round white fuzz box shown in the second picture (with a true bypass switch of course), and that's about what it'd cost if I go ahead and do it. I'm thinking of starting with 10 units, but I might scale that back to 5 units if there isn't enough interest.

I'm waiting for your input,

Thanks!

I think I've figured it out. It's a PN918 made my Fairchild Semiconductor. Really cool sounding fuzz dude! :thu:

Those all sound really good! Mine sounds a little less gritty, but more like the Big Muff Pi.

I'm gonna try that with Audio Adrenalines "Big House" riff. Might work. Might not.

I need an overdrive. Any plans on doing those?

There are several schematics out there for overdrives, I don't have any particular one I'd recommend over another. I do really like my DOD Mystic Blues Overdrive for a slightly overdriven, bluesy tone. Give one a try. I think Musician's Friend had 'em for $40 when I bought mine. I probably couldn't build one for that price.

If I was to design an overdrive, I'd want to keep the signal as clean as possible and just boost the level of the signal, at all frequencies. For that, you'd need either a JFET preamp, or a FET opamp that will operate at very close to the supply voltage. A 741 opamp (like in a Distortion +) clips at 5V where the supply voltage is 9V. I'd want a chip that clips at 8V or so. Also, using clipping diodes in the feedback loop of the opamp rounds the corners of the waveform, which smooths the sound out a bit, and sounds more tube-like.

Are you wanting a clean boost, or something that will distort on it's own?
