BiC
Alright guys, let's look at this sort of as a "scavanger hunt". Mudcat
Unfortunately, since I live in Middle Tennessee, none of them are left. George Gruhn has them all. Dak Lander
Not a thrift store, a pawn shop... I just picked up a Ventura V-6 acoustic guitar for $55.00. The strings are older than I am but still tuned up and sounded good. The neck has a very slight extra bow & the sound board has a very slight bulge behind the bridge, but neither is very bad. There are very few dings & dinks on the guitar. Looks like a Rosewood body, Spruce top and a rosewood fretboard. A bit high on the action but intonation is pretty damned close with ancient strings. I can't wait until I get a set of DRs on the beast. It'll be a great match for my cobbled up Ventura 12 string "Bruno". http://www.daklandermusic.com/pics/ventura1.jpg http://www.daklandermusic.com/pics/ventura2.jpg Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." alguit
Hey BiC, I accept the challenge; I've got just the thrift shops in mind; in one, an old friend of mine found a silverface twin reverb for $50.00.
Mike Gug
I have a feeling I'm going to be very envious of a couple of stories this will bring out. I look now and then. I've got my mother, queen of the thrift stores, already on the hunt. The old ladies grab everything of value before the great "unwashed" get to most of the stuff. Man, that makes me mad. BiC
Not a bad looking guitar, Dak! Thanx to everyone for joining in. I'm currently in England- I'm in the Air Force. But my wife & I will be home next month for about 30 days. So, I plan on searching the thrift shops there once I get the chance. In the meanwhile, I'll see what I can dig up here. Guitar Geezer
Haven't run across anything of interest yet... just knockoffs of knockoffs of pointy head guitars Seeing how this is a military type town, you'd think there would be some neat stuff floating around! Gabriel E.
No guitar stuff. Bought a Lowrey tube organ from the early 60s for $30 and am trying to get it working. Kinda works but not well. Also bought another old tube radio from the 50s and am trying to fix that too. $10 "You never can vouch for your own consciousness." - Norman Mailer

What condition was it in? Silverface Twins go for about 600 around here. Shut up and play.
Blue Strat
Unless I find one for a $20 or less, I'm afraid I'm out of the hunt. I just made my big purchase for the next two years, but that's cool because I've got about all the guitars I need or want now. I'm not hard to please. My aunt has found some really cool old Harmony acoustics around here at flea markets and garage sells in her search for antiques. One I remember had a Fender Strat style headstock on it. My cousins don't seem to really appreciate how cool those are. I think there's a lot of value in a cheap old guitar you can drag anywhere and play without having to worry about it getting scratched or dented. BlueStrat a.k.a. Mike Gug
Hey! I went to a thrift store and they didn't have ANYTHING! Is this some kind of scam!? However, I did pick up a set of Las Vegas salt and pepper shakers for a dime. They were warped in the dishwasher, and they leak pepper a little, but I saved a BUNDLE! Now I can get that Tube Screamer! Mikegug www.facebook.com/theresistancemusic
Mike Gug
Hey, I think I came across something pretty nice! I went to a thrift store to check for guitars. Again, nothing. HOWEVER!, I did see two drum sets! They were $250 for the pair. I saw one set that had nice hardware and a Ludwig head on the front of the kick. It came with a descent snare stand, a Pearl kick pedal, Natural wood drums, which include a kick, two mounted toms and a floor tom. One head needs to be replaced, but it's in nice shape! The pedal is worth at least $20. I got the whole deal for $70! My drummer is coming over later tonight to see if it isn't a Ludwig. If so, it's from the 70's at least and could be worth some money! I severely doubt it is, but it's still a great buy! My boys seem to like it. Thanks BiC! Mikegug www.facebook.com/theresistancemusic
Gabriel E.
The pile is mounting: Just bought a stylin' RCA Victor phonograph console from '60 or '61 for $10 on Monday. Needed tubes but the only one I didn't have laying around was a 5Y3. Found an NOS 5Y3 at a local electronics house for $5. The phonograph even came with an extra needle. Sounds great. I have purchased the following at thrift stores over the last 9 months: 3 tube radios (one's a bitchin' Zenith shortwave) 1 "vintage" solid-state radio 2 tube phono consoles 1 rather large tube organ 1 old Electro Voice dispatch mic 1 tube 1/4" reel-reel deck Still no guitar stuff yet. My wife is growing concerned. "You never can vouch for your own consciousness." - Norman Mailer
whitefang
I've rarely ever seen a guitar at the thrift shop we occasionally go to. And when I did, they weren't worth the FIRST look, let alone a second. But, I HAVE picked up a couple of mid-to-late '70's stereo recievers for about $30 that only required cleaning. Right now, the Marantz I use in the basement came from there. Cost me $25 to buy, and seven bucks for the tuner cleaner. And I'm pushing it through a pair of mid-'70's Pioneer CS88A's bought at a yard sale for $15! And they sound like new. But, I always keep an eye out for guitars at the thrift shop. Actually, my wife bought me a 12 string with the name Riviera on the headstock, but after restringing it, the top started splitting just behind the bridge. That was about 16 years ago. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
