Somebody hep me out (James Brown style HOUHHHH!)

I need names for a couple of chords. Diminished sort of jobs...and I don't feel like dusting off my old theory book...I figure someone has to know these offhand...

The first is sort of a C7 with a D bass, but it has a diminished feel to it...

3 G

5 E

3 Bb

0 D

x

x

And then, as diminished chords repeat three frets up...the next one is just probably a different voicing or inversion of the same chord......

6 Bb

8 G

6 Db

0 D

x

x

Thanks... Yeah. I'm dumb. So shoot me.

Hmmmnn... what key are you playing in when you use these grips, and what sounds and feels like the root under each one? (Even if that "root" isn't present in that fingering.) Context is everything when identifying harmonic mechanisms!

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?

Off the top of me 'ead it seems like a Emin7b5/D (D bass). Hmm. More simply Gmin6/D (5th in the bass or 2nd inversion). This chord often wants to be follwed by resolving to DMaj7. The next one I'd call a Bbmin6/F which might go to EbMaj7 but I'm just conjecturing those next chords. It could just as easily go to Eb9 among many other places.

All the best,

Henry Robinett

Just for the analytical fun of it, I'd like to know the entire progression, with the actual fingerings you use.

I promise not to steal'em to plaigerize a mega-platinum runaway crossover hit, Tedster! I just wanna see the whole picture, and fool around to see what I can figure out. Especially with the legup that henryrobinett has provided me!

One other common name for the 1st chord name Henry offers (Emin7b5/D) is a "half-diminished" [spelling = 1-b3-b5-b7], so called because the b7 is not diminished to the bb7.

Context is everything so it's hard to know for sure without hearing, especially as dim. chords (as you , Ted, suggested this "sounds") are used as key-changing intermediaries.

Another idea (that may or may not apply) is that in some cases it seems to me easier to think of harmonies outside the context of chord names or even keys.

Think of how tunes are harmonized; sometimes you construct a progression & work within it, other times you might build from the melody. Even if this is not conscious, it can occur as you hear the tune's basis mentally as you search for the harmonies/chords & find chords that fit. These can easily bridge or even ignore standard rules of key, etc.

Notation is helpful in these cases.

I was also thinking that the Gm6/D could easily be followed by C7 which wants to go to FMaj7, kind of a strange ii -V -I progression. But for me it works best to pedal on D in the bass and do to DMaj7 or even D minor and back to Gm6/D and back again. Kind of an interlude section or verse..

But where Ted's going, who's song it is, is some place else! D - D7 - Gm6/D (wouldn't go to DMaj7). Then Bbm6/F? Depends on the melody, always. Unless it doesn't :D

All the best,

I'd name the first one Fred.

And name the second one Larry.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

The first one could be Gm6/D, C7/D, Em7-5, or any of Bbdim/D, Gdim/D, Edim/D; depends on the bass note (if any), the key and the context (how it is used).

Frankly, the name isn't that big of a deal.. if it's the sound you want....
