Blue Strat
I was at my friend's apartment the other day, and he was playing through the old Peavey Rage 158 that I sold him. He was kicking the shit out of it with a Les Paul through the clean channel, with the amp about 60% of full volume! I always used the distortion channel on that little amp, and got some killer lo-fi sounds out of that thing. I don't know why I sold. So, I'm now considering getting another Rage 158 or some other small transistor amp for all the wacked tones it'll make. Anybody else ever have an experience like that? BlueStrat a.k.a. Virtual Jim
My first amp, a Kustom 10-watt job has the best fucking white noise distortion ever. Ever. So you switch from a humbucker to a single coil? Same damn tone. Fuck dreaming about getting a Vetta and using it to combine a Marshall and a Boogie. I wanna hear my Kustom and a cranked AC30 mixed together!
Caevan O’Shite
I have a love/hate relationship with my Danelectro "Nifty Fifty" ("Fifty" WHAT, I'd like to know, it sure isn't fifty watts) SS amp. It sounds surprisingly good clean, but the built-in distortion circuit (they called it "Dirty-Sweet") is a sandpapery, thin, completely sucky sound, no matter what you do. Caevan O’Shite
Actually, Dak, I expected you to say something about your favorite practice amp being a beat-upt ol'Guild flat-top, or something to that effect.... Dak Lander
Caevan, yer pretty close. I have this old, plastic SongTech Junior Studio thing that I plug an electric into if I want to plug in an electric. Hey, it overdrives in a hurry & runs a some D cell batteries & it ain't so loud as to make the neighbors realise just how bad I am. Iffen I want to play electric real loud I'll plug into the Fender Hot Rod de Ville 2X12. Iffen I want to play an acoustic amped I'll plug or mic to my cheap-assed studio amp, (Samson) or, un-amped, play my GUILD D4 flat top or one of my others. Sheeit mang, you livin' next door to me or sumpin'? Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke... Blue Strat
Ahem... We were discussing practice amps. I've had some good results in Guitar Center by messing with a Fender practice amp of some sort. I think it was a "Frontman" amp? It was in the 15 watt range, single 8" speaker, clean and distortion channels w/ shared EQ. Sounds really cool with a humbucker equiped git-fiddle. BlueStrat a.k.a. DC
Most solid state amps sound pretty nasty to me, I'm quite fond of my 7, 25, and 50/100 watt tube amps. However, I'm kinda intrigued with the new Brian May recording amp. Wonder if it's as cool as a Rockman X-100 was when it came out? -David http://www.garageband.com/artist/MichaelangelosMuse
Mike Gug
A guy I play with has a Fender Champ, 10 inch speaker in there. It's got a good sound. You'd get the Peavey Rage 158 cheaper though. I liked my Rage 158 OK. The Crate 8 inch practice amps are ok. Mine has some onboard effects (rev I and I, Chorus, dist.). I put an ad in the paper and someone responded. Total cost of about $55. Not too bad. I like the Crate better than the Peavey. Mikegug www.facebook.com/theresistancemusic

DIAMOND DUST
I have a really old practice amp made by HARMONY. you would think anything made by harmony would be a piece of crap, but its one of the best sounding small amps i've heard. It's 15 watts and has three inputs.there's a deferent tube atatched to each input.50C5,12AU6,35W4.It also has the original speaker,an 8inch jensen with a blue lable that says Special Design.I run a digitech pds1550 thru it.You can get bloomfield and roy buchannon licks out of it really well. http://b-cordova.dmusic.com/

MarshallGibson_6
I've got a Fender Frontman 15W with reverb, and 2 VOX Pathfinders ( one w/reverb, one without, both with line-outs).They're great.Hooked up in stereo from a ZOOM 508 Delay, they're awesome.I've also got a 100W Marshall JCM900 2X12 combo, a 100W JCM 800 head & a 50W JMP MKII head, with 2 1960A 4X12's and 2 1936 2X12's. I'm ready for anything. Anything sometimes means small rooms w/small stages. For the price of a stomp box, I think they're worth having around. They fit in the trunk real good. And you're above the drums, got raunch.Yep Don't sell anything. Just keep it all. Let it pile up and see it grow tall. Up thru the roof and into the sky. More is always better so pile it sky high. RBI've got a 60's black face Vibro Champ. Think it's around 7 watts. Sounds like you're already covered. strat0124
I haven't tried the Galaxie tube unit, but I have played through one of the earlier Epi tube amps, with the 8" speaker and ten watts I think. Not bad, not good. But for a buck and a half....its got to be better than the solid state alternative. I think Wilco recorded some stuff with one as well. However....I don't know why more people don't go for a used Pro Jr. To me its the SHEEIITTTT. For around a hundred bucks used, you will have an amp that may trounce on amps costing four times as much. Its a killer little amp. I've even used mine as a head through a 4X12 cab.....instant JTM45-like tone. I know those who have already spent two grand for their amps may raise an eyebrow, but check it out. Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

Although I LOVE the sound it makes cranked, I'm afraid of damaging the little speaker. So, I generally just use it for cleaner stuff... Regarding S.S. practice amps, I've got a little Peavey Bandit which is probably 5-10W with a tiny little speaker (maybe 8" or maybe even 6"). I bought a guitar strap off ebay for $15 and the guy threw in this amp and some cables for free. It wasn't working, but it turned out to be just a bad connection on the input jack...super-easy fix! You can get some of the craziest, most saturated distortion tones out of that little thing. And you talk about recording BIG? This thing sounds like a stack on "tape." Never thought I'd say this but I would not sell that little Peavey. I also have a Marshall Micro Stack (I think that's the right name)...the one with a 12 or 15 watt head and two single 10" cabs. That thing is capable of some decent tones too. I bought it mainly because I thought it looked cool, but I've been very happy with some of the noises it makes. None more black.
