how to record an electric guitar in audio

I would like to know how to properly record my electric guitar into Coll Edit Pro(an audio recording program).

I have an OLD digitech RP-1 effects processor .

I usually run outa this into my little Crate amp.

I'm wondering, how do i properly record my electric guitar? what kind of preamp should i get, stand-alone or one that's part of a sound card? I don't think that my OLD RP-1 processor even has a good enough preamp on it, for my recordings don't come out that great

.

any hepl is VERY appreciated.

How are you going into the soundcard? Mic'ing the amp or running direct?

You say your recordings don't come out that great. Can you be more specific? You can't here them? The tone is bad? Let me know and I'll try to hook you up.

When I record to Cakewalk (similar to Cool Edit), I like to record clean and direct and then add the effects later using plug-ins.

Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked in the head by an iron boot? Of course you don't--no one does--that never happens.

Yeah. There are a lot of options here. If you could be more specific about what you are doing, and the problems you are having, I suspect we will have some useful (and some not-so-useful) advice.

Personally, I change what I am doing depending on what I want to achieve. Sometimes I go direct & add stuff later, sometimes I will use the line-out from my amp (digital modeling amp), or a pedal, sometimes I will mic the amp (or the guitar, or both...).

May all your thoughts be random!
