I first picked up the guitar at around 8 years old. My sisters had an old cheapo 3/4 size nylon string laying around with a chord book. I goofed around with and taught myself most of the basic open chords over the next few years but never learned any actual songs. I took my first lessons at around 13 and after finding out what I knew, my teacher gave me Greg Lake's "From The Beginning" to learn. I'm very glad she did because it really piqued my interest in the possibilities that lay ahead. It took me several weeks to learn but it was a great first song since it's not really all that difficult but it used a lot of forms and fingerings that I had never been exposed to.

"Peaceful Easy Feeling" by the Eagles I think was the first. Followed shortly by "A Space Oddity" by David Bowie and "Ridin' the Storm Out" by REO Speedwagon.

Since I took up the guitar again three years ago I have only learned some easy classical guitar songs, no popular songs. I'm either lazy or only interested in writing my own songs.

69tele,

House of the rising Sun
Yeah, great song. :thu: I learned that "down the road a piece".

Tedster,

Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers
I think I learned this one around the same time as "House of the Rising Sun". How about "Lemon Tree" and "Crooked Little Man"? I have a song book (someplace) with those and other obscure Johnny Rivers songs.

I think the first song I learned was something kinda dumb, like "Go Tell Aunt Rhody the Old Grey Goose is Dead"...

Then it was a bunch of classical stuff (lessons).

The first rock song I really learned was "Rock and Roll All Night" by Kiss.

May all your thoughts be random!

well, I said I learned "Crazy Train" first, but it was actually just the rythym part (and that's still all I know of Crazy Train!). ;)

Just so you know, by definition in my state eighteen is an adult, as well as most states in this country. I don't know where you got 21.

I think you're confusing the drinking age with the voting age again. Silly, bluestrat. I told you Bacardi and 100 single-malt scotch are not a good thing to have before posting.

I was just about to write that the first part of this post was just a hilarious set up, but I see drum groove already stated that. Guys, that had me cracking up! What was really funny was how many people were believing you'd actually learned "Hot for Teacher" in 1/2 hour, even after you said it was a joke! You might want to tone down the racial stuff a bit, though, even if it was in jest.

Oh, by the way, "Working Man" by Rush was mine.

You've got the best guitar

You've got the best amp

lynng,

Pipeline"...think it was the first song on the Play Along With The Ventures LP....
I think that's the one I learned "Walk Don't Run" on. BTW, what's not to know about an LP? It has one groove, big deal :D

As far as the (poor) joke that started this thread, I understood the "joke". It just wasn't that funny, so I continued in a more serious vain. BTW, the racial slurs were much less than amusing, they were .... in poor taste, ... at the best.

You're right, I forgot that you can buy porn at 18. You can even pose naked for porn or star in an adult film at 18! My mistake... :D

Okay, okay, ya got me. My first song wasn't "Secret Agent Man". That came later. My first was "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" by John McLaughlin.

Heh, heh, me, too, followed closely by "John Henry". First rock 'n roll songs were "Help" and "A Hard Day's Night". (Do I have to say that those are by the Beatles?) With those songs I started a practice that I followed for several years - bought the individual sheet music for songs on the radio I liked (yes, those two were on the Top 40 when I learned them) and just learned whatever chords were in the song. First guitar riffs were "Wipeout" and "Secret Agent"...

It's been a long time, can't remember for sure, but "Louie, Louie", "Kicks" by Paul Revere and the Raiders, "Little Black Egg", "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield, "For Your Love", by the Yardbirds. Then I remember progressing up to "Day Tripper" by the Beatles..........First real guitar was a yellow sunburst Gibson Melody Maker, that I hated. Now I have a Taylor 12-String and a Martin D-18 and I'm happy with those two.

I think the first full song I could play was Kiss' "Detroit Rock City". I could play bits and pieces of other songs, but that was the first one that I knew all the parts. I think "More Than a Feeling" and "Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Coo" came after that. Did somebody say keep on rockin'?

Who can remember that far back?! :D My first song was probably something by Peter, Paul and Mary, or early Bob Dylan. I distinctly remember the first *riff* I learned was the opening line to "Happy Together" by the Turtles.
