Most skilled guitar player alive: Carlos, Jeff, Eric, Kirk Etc...

Here's a novel twist on the question of the most skilled guitar player. Check out Doyle Dykes. He is a finger-style player who arranges all of his own pieces. Most people haven't heard of him, but the things he can do with his signature Taylor will make any guitarist's jaw drop. I think the only way to get his CD is through his website: www.doyledykes.com or at his concerts. The website has tour dates.

This is my first time in this or any other forum, so please forgive any dumb mistakes I may make due to lack of experience.

While I haven't kept up with him lately, I'm fairly sure he's still alive.

Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs) is for my money the most skilled player around.

Some really great names here.

I'm gonna have to go with Phil Keaggy. Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist, he said "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy". Keaggy doesn't do metal, and that's about all he doesn't do. An amazingly gifted man, has all the technique in the world, plays every style. And he's not just cold & calculating, he can brink some serious rock.

I recommend his Glass Harp albums from the late 60's, and just about any of his other albums. And there is this young guy from Washington named Chris Greely AKA "SOLO" formerly of Rock N Roll Worship Circus, he's only twenty, but he's a freak of nature.

If you guys want a real laugh check out Rolling Stones list of the 100 best guitarists of all time. Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie are all not on the list, but Johnny Ramone, Lou Reed and Joni Mitchell are. EVH is ranked like 80 or something.

I'm a nut for concerts. Live CDs,DVDs, and of course live shows. I've seen many unbelievable players, known and unknown. But I am most in awe of Jeff Beck. He always looks great, plays with no pick, master of the whammy, for that matter the Strat itself. His technique is totally his own. He's been at it for 40 years and he's still amazing.

Just an opinion. No Facts in judging 'the best'

There are so many skilled guitarist. The jazz/fusion guys have raised the bar so high it's scary.I saw satriani at a chili fest in columbus,OH and there was only about two hundred people. He's definatly a bad ass.BUT,all the skill in the world won't make you sound like JEFF BECK.I saw him up close, third row.He is an absolute monster.I think he's from another planet. The whole crowd was hanging on his every note like they were at church. And they were.HE gets my vote for the badest bad ass on the planet. No joke he brought me to tears. :thu:

Don't sell anything. Just keep it all. Let it pile up and see it grow tall. Up thru the roof and into the sky. More is always better so pile it sky high.

the question is who is the most skilled player alive, not who has tone,as for skills i saw a lot of talenmted players listed but also noticed that the technical players werent getting much attention.John petrucci of dream theater is amazing and almost untouchable in the rock style right now, jason becker,a young guitar player who was diagnoesed with a crippling desease and cant play anymore, but is alive, was a prodigy and will always be one of the best players/composeres of all time.even some of the 80s players were incredible, lynch, bratta, beach,.it was all good till cobain killed the guitar solo. just an observation

HASIL ADKINS!

The man keeps 4 different times on the guitar and plays the drums and sings at the same time!

He's written 7,000 songs and can play them all + over 2,000 covers from memory!

Show me ANYONE who can do as much.

He's been underground for over 50 years.

He's got punk cred out the ying yang.

He's possibly the last blues master.

I'll take your word for it about Paul Galbraith - but should'nt he be wearing a helmet if he's going to ride one of those things? Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well in my opinion the top 20 guitarists of all time in no particular order would have to be Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Kieth Richards, Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Johnson, Peter Frampton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Steve Miller, Tom Scholz of Boston, Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend, and any of Lynyrd Skynyrd's guitarists!!

It's hard to say how any one particular guy can be the best, but I totally agree with the Allan Holdsworth and Al DiMeola mentions, they're both amazing. Eric Johnson is crazy good too, you should check out the G3 Live in Concert CD, it's got Satch and Vai on it too (!!), also worthy mentions. What about J Frusciante? I think rhythmically he's just incredible.

Another dude no one's mentioned is John McLaughlin, you should really check him out and see why. Mad electric stuff with the Mahavishnu orchestra (early 70s) and alot of ridiculous acoustic guitar in the later 70s and onwards. Also Paco de Lucia? Has no one heard of him?? Honestly, he blows everyone that everyone's mentioned out of the water. I've got one album for everybody...Friday Night in San Francisco...get it and you'll see why!!

I agree. I'm amazed how little credit is usually given to the unarguably best player in the world now. Paco de Lucia. He's really really worth checking out. I saw a documentary where Al di Meola and McLaughlin among other giants acclaimed him as the best. My pick is Django though
No one can touch Paco. Seeing him play is the most humbling experience any guitarist can have.

A true guitar god.
