In case you haven't head, there's a new Jeff Beck recording being released on August 5th, and he is about to tour the US with B.B. King (July 25-September 7)...

Oh, yeah, and he's going to be featured in the September issue of Guitar Player, I understand...

Not long ago, I caught the last hour of the A&E "Live By Request" show with B.B.

Beck showed up for the last part of it, and was in rare form!

This tour should kick ass!!

I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

JB is definitely one of my favorite players. i saw him live many years ago. a great player. hope i'm able to catch him this time around. i think i remember something about him using a "mercury switch" kind of thing for the tone control on his guitar. by changing position of the guitar (tilting it) he could change the tone. at any rate- always great chops, style and tone. what more could you ask for?

While it's nice that he's doing a blues tour B.B.,I'd be more interested in seeing a tour supporting his new CD.I wonder if this means he'll be doing 2 tours back to back or not supporting the new CD at all.

Does anyone know yet where the tour is going to stop?

Here's a short interview with Jeff and BB, with tour dates at the bottom:

While it's nice that he's doing a blues tour B.B.,I'd be more interested in seeing a tour supporting his new CD.
While he'll probably come out during B.B.'s set for a tune or two, Beck's band is playing their own set, undoubtedly to support the new CD. I had heard earlier in the year that the band was going to be the "Guitar Shop trio" (that is, Terry Bozzio on drums and Tony Hymas on keyboards. A look at Terry Bozzio's website shows him on tour with Jeff Beck: http://www.terrybozzio.com/tour.html

Also, a look at Tony Hymas' site shows the same:

http://www.tonyhymas.com/news.htm

I wonder if there's a bass player (Pino Palladino toured to augment this trio in the mid-nineties...)

Ive never understood why people like Jeff Beck so much but ive only heard a few of his songs so maybe hes a better player than i give him credit for!?!
D-Prime, Dave th Dude, he's one of the best. He's got it all -- musicality, tone, creativity, groove, passion, style, restlessness...

I would say also, don`t just follow the people who say, `check out this stuff from `71-noooooo...

check out his NEW material-I had pretty much forgotten about him, then I got handed a tape of Japan 2000-in-freakin-crebible. Jennifer Batten trading licks on `Blue Wind`. That tape is now going for $20 on e-bay.

Right on Skip. Ive never figured out why people talk so much about the first JB Group either. Rod Stewart never could sing and the songs they picked were awful IMHO. The second group was much better I think. Going Down and Glad All Over were great songs from that era. I really miss Beck and Middleton trading licks. But it was Blow By Blow and Wired that will go down in the history books. I think There and Back was much better than critics gave him credit for too. Also, look for a CD he did called Jeff Beck With Yan Hammer Live. Those are the only four Jeff Beck recordings youll ever need. Im not saying that everything else is crap but theres nothing else hes done that can really compare.

Theres some little bits here and there hes done on other recordings that are noteworthy though such as, The Secret Policemans Ball stuff. He smoked Eric Clapton on Further On Up the Road from that. I taped an old Westwood One Radio show he did with the second Jeff Beck Group thats fantastic but I dont know that it ever made it to CD. At least Ive got my tapes! And there was a Hendrix Tribute album a few years back that featured a great version of Beck playing Manic Depression as well as a Clapton version of Stone Free that (and Im NOT a big Clapton fan) killed! Unfortunately, the rest of the recording was terrible.

Also, (and this aint no biggie really), if you rent that old movie, Twins with Schwarzenegger and DeVito, theres a lengthy scene in a redneck bar where you can see Beck wailing away on The Train Kept A-Rollin' with some (?) band thats kinda cool I think. My friend, Rob, and I saw him with SRV at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis just before Stevies plane went down. Beck opened the show with the Guitar Shop line-up and killed. I dont know if youve ever seen him live or not but hes kind of hit and miss. He takes a lot of chances, which I think is great, but that has the downside of playing some sour notes here and there. That doesnt bother me though cause I know that just means hes digging deep to try and play something new every time he plays. There are nights when hes truly awe-inspiring though and this was one of them. As good as SRV was, he just couldnt compete that night. We left after Stevies second song. Had we known it would be the last time we would see him we certainly would have stayed longer. But Beck was the main attraction for us anyway and we werent disappointed. I didnt like the Guitar Shop CD much except for a couple of cuts, but I wish they would have recorded this concert.

d-prime & dave,

Jeff Beck has always been one of my favorites... which isn't the same as saying that I have loved everything he has done - Beck, Bogart, Appice was just bad. I think he has played some of the most sublime and some of the ugliest guitar ever, sometimes on the same song! The thing that I find really wonderful is that he is always changing, always exploring new ground and never rests on his laurels. Compare him to his contempraries - Clapton, Santana, etc. and they're all playing pretty much the same stuff they were doing 25 years ago. JB seems to reinvent his playing every couple of years. Plus he gets more unique tones and sounds out of a guitar than just about anyone.

I haven't decided if I'm going to see him on this tour as listening to blues doesn't float my boat. If he supporting his new album I'd love to see him and I'd even put up with sitting through the rest of the show ;)

I'm going to have to see this tour!!! The nearest gig is about 250 miles away, but I think I'm going to make the effort!

To those who don't understand what the fuss is about, I wish there were an easy answer to give, but there just isn't. Beck has changed his style(s) SO many times over the years that he's extremely difficult to pigeon-hole. The best I can offer is that he has a sense of music that is always dead-on. His playing skills are second to virtually no one, and he can really cook in every genre I've ever heard him play. -- If you "don't like" Jeff Beck, just listen to a different album, then you probably will.

May all your thoughts be random!

I live near Charlotte, NC. Is he going to tour there or maybe Atlanta, GA or Richmond, VA, or Washington, DC?

Dave, sorry, a little slow on the draw. Above is a link. Haven't check it out.

Aerosmith/KISS tix on sale the 19th! Me and a bunch of guys are going in October! I've wanted to see KISS since middle school. In the last 5 years, I've discovered Aerosmith. Can't wait!

Just because B.B. headlines the tour, why are you assuming it's a blues show?

Actually they changed the name of B.B.'s little annual festival to the "B.B. King MusicFestival" this year...

The other bands, Galactic and Mofro, are funk/soul bands...

Back in '83, there was a TV show called Rock & Roll Tonight that aired on Saturday nights. (The audio track was simulcast on local FM stations - these were the days before stereo TVs and home theater!) I had just gotten my first VCR, and I religiously set it to tape the show before I left for my gigs. My favorite show was the night Jeff Beck and Les Paul played together, it was great. They traded back and forth, and I guess Les Paul got a little frustrated, he reached around and yanked the cord out of Beck's guitar. Sadly, my newest VCR ate the tape recently, I've got to figure a way to splice it back together.

I saw him on his last tour and he was dead on and sounded fucking amazing as always! I missed his show in 99' and my friends who went told me that I was a prick for not going and that I should be ashamed of myself  . I though they were over-reacting, but after seeing the man live I can see why they said this. So now I'm going to pass this message along to you guys. You can bet your ass I'll watch him again on this tour!

I can't let myself miss this one! I hope he comes through Atlanta (... I suppose I COULD check Jeff Beck's website, eh?). I've missed a couple of opportunities to see him, and I won't do it again!

Galactic is also an excellent live band. I would go to see Galactic, even if Jeff Beck wasn't there. They lay down some nice grooves. Jeff Raines, their guitarist, does an excellent job of playing in the groove, without overdoing it.

I don't think anyone here would be disappointed in seeing this show, one way or another!

Yeah, I had that on tape too. I taped over it long ago I'm sure. As I recall, Saga also played on that particular night.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions... even the "I don't like blues... or I don't like Jeff Beck" people...

But for those that aren't familiar with Jeff's work, I'll echo the "don't be limited to thinking that his '70's material is the only good stuff."

Although I really enjoy ALL the phases of Jeff, and really dig the Blow by Blow / Wired / with the Jan Hammer Group Live era cd's... as well as the earlier Truth, Beckola, Rough and Ready era music.

I think Jeff's true greatness is in the ability to change and grow in a way his contemporaries can't or won't...

I personally think his last two cd's Who Else and You Had it Coming are amazing... and some of the most compelling and interesting material of his career.

As far as his live shows go, he's got so much material to draw upon, that he's able to cross over the "era's"...

His control, agressiveness, lyrical style, finger picking, vibrato bar control, volume control, economy of movement, and "ear" make his live shows some of the most moving I've seen.

Yeah, I'm obviously a big fan. The guy has my complete respect and admiration. He's EXACTLY what he wants to be... and never sold out or tried to pander to the music of the moment.

To the folks that dislike him, or are "stuck" on his early material... that's your choice... Amen.

To those who have an open mind and who are curious to see one of the greatest musicians who ever picked up a guitar... go check him out and see if I'm right!

I bet you'll be impressed. :thu:

Some info on Jeff Beck's new CD which is apperently titled "Jeff",from the Epic Records web site
The twelve tracks comprising Jeff include an eclectic mix ranging from electronica to blues to Bulgarian folk and includes collaborations with Apollo 440, splattercell, and remixes by Mike Barbiero. Jeff was created by Jeff Beck and produced by Andy Wright. Andy's expert production and programming has been heard on recordings by Massive Attack and Natalie Imbruglia, Wright also produced Jeff's last album You Had It Coming.

Guitplayer, exactly my sentiments. He's been my favorite guitarist since I was just a kid and I'm 53 now. Thats a long time to not get tired of a player's sound. It's just that he is ALWAYS cutting edge.

You're right about the depth and breadth of his live material, it's just incredible. Last time I saw him he did "A Day in the Life" from the George Martin tribute CD. I hadn't heard the CD before and was just floored.

I'm 15 years old (almost 16) and Jeff Beck has been my absolute favorite since I saw him in '99. I love most of his material but I have to say my favorite stuff is his most recent of Who Else and You Had It Coming. Can't wait for the new CD!

I missed him on the YHIC tour in '01 because of a gig (the gig was not worth it, alas) but I have tickets to see him this August. I saw BB and Jeff on A&E's Live by Request, and with all due respect to BB, Jeff was on fire and proved he is one of the best. His playing is always authentic, moving, and from the soul, no matter what he's doing musically.

MAN! What a bummer!

I just spent 45 minutes typing a post thanking you all for replying to my question about show locations and then individuals that specifically gave me advise / information. It was a very flattering post to all ya' all, but .......

The browser screwed up (one too many smily faces) and I lost it all! I usually do it in MS Word when its that long, but I didn't think it was going to be that long.

To (GREATLY) simply, Which TWO or THREE (PLEASE, ONLY two or three or I'll get too confused. ) of his CD's (early, mid, now career) would you recommend to preview him and see if I want to spend all that money (enought for a new axe! :D ) to see him play.?

Everyone certainly seem real high on him (or something else!) and I owe it to myself to see the best. Because I CERTAINLY will never be that good, or even improve over a "strum, dum, dee, dum" folk guy.

Please answer one and all, fifteen to sixty (yeah, I know fifty ryhmes better, but it would leave a few of us out).

Dave the Dumb AND Unknowing AND .........

Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
