Wah placement

It seems that many, if not most, most rig configurations place the wah before the overdrive pedal. I've found that my RMC2 sounds much better AFTER my ToneBone Classic when using both effects. Is this because the ToneBone is tube-based, thus requiring a strong guitar signal? Or am I missing something?

I generally place the wah ahead of the overdrive, but not always. Different configurations give you different tones, and therefore different tools to work with.

I can't imagine that the tubes would dictate the signal chain (although I'm not an expert - maybe Myles or one of the other folks who are in-the-know could offer an opinion).

Ultimately, set it up any way you like it. There is no "right" or "wrong". Have fun! :thu:

May all your thoughts be random!

If that's your preference, that's fine. :) Putting a wah after the overdrive/distortion source gives the classic envelope filter like effect (to my ears), as well as the wah sound.

I like mine just before the distortion. I have two Tube Screamers, and I occasionally use one as a semi-clean boost in high gain tones. That gets placed AFTER the wah to help boost its output. I use the standard Dunlop CryBaby as my wah.

So, for my high gain sound:

guitar > wah > TS-7 overdrive > Metal Zone > front end of amp > DOD GS30 in effects loop for delays, chorus, ring mod, eq lead boost
